I was wondering if you can connect to shared folders on Windows (network shares) using Pocket PC. I want to stream mp3's from my desktop so I don't have to use up my memory on my device?

I have not seen a way to "browse" a network yet but you might be able to ftp over to a desktop machine using IE.

I don't think it's possible to browse network shares using ActiveSync by itself. Lord knows, I've tried... and searched for any help on doing so. Nothing. You can do it with an ethernet or wireless network card, of course.

If you really, really need to do it, there is a (very buggy and unstable) commercial product out there, Crosstech PocketLANCE which will let you browse network shares via ActiveSync, with the help of a server app on your desktop PC and a client on your PocketPC. However, the trial version's server app crashed my Win98SE machine at home without ever working properly, and caused my desktop at work to be very unstable. The product itself hasn't been updated in many months, and I'd suggest you avoid it unless you really, really need the capability and are willing to shell out the bucks, cross your fingers and pray.

Going to set up an FTP server on my Linux box tonight and see if that works over ActiveSync. You could, in a real pinch, run VNC (freeware a la PCAnywhere), connect to your desktop, and use Windows Explorer to browse shares and transfer files -- but why would you want to, when you'll only be a few feet from the keyboard anyway? ;)

Using a wireless network card, how can you browse network folders? I've tried, but no luck.

Thanks!

Interesting. I've been trying everything I can think of to access my network shares via USB ActiveSync (3.6 here, too), and no luck. 'Wonder if it has to do with my using an NT network with User-Level Access.

Use Citrix, a wireless card, and the ICA client on your Axim and browse away :D

**Disclaimer: I am a hardcore Citrix fan..it's the best thing to ever happen to Windows so I may be biased ;)

I do have a Wireless Network Card, And the other Night I figured out how to explore shared network drives. But when I get to the file I want to open and click it .. it does nothing. I can tap and hold and it gives me the options to Cut, Copy, etc .. but not to open it with its assigned app. I would like to just browse for the mp3 file I want to listen to and play it streaming over the network instead of downloading it to my PDA (and BTW ... to access the network share as I did I went to File Explorer : To the Shared Icon down on the bottom (Something with a hand under it) and typed in the Path (for me it was like \\Server\Mp3s ). I was able to play an mp3 over the newtwork by opening a URL in Windows Media player and typing in the full path name. But that is a Pain in the but .. especially if you don't know the actual file name of a song you want to play

Code Joe: goto www.freewareppc.com/

Tons of free apps to browse network, note: as
far as I know using the built in File Explorer will not
let you open files when browsing network shares,

This program will let you open files on network shares:
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/total...commander.shtml

This program will let you map network shares to be a virutal
folder on your device:
