Hello,
I am a college student, I just spend all the money I have on an Axim 400. I have been looking for a PDA forever and just got up the nerve to spend this much money on myself b/c its a huge deal for me. I hvae a refurbished Dell laptop and I thought I had heard very good things about Dell products and cust. service - so I went the the Axim.
Now, after joining this site b/c I was so excited about getting my first PPC, I have been reading all this TONS of negatives and problems with everything!!!
Did I make the wrong choice here? Should I have waited until it had been out longer so the problems would be fixed, or so that more experienced PDA companies could make inexpensive models to compete with it??? I'm just worried b/c I dont know that much about troubleshooting, etc. I just wanted a nice PPC.
Thanks,
Matthew
Do you really get that feeling here? It seems like there are lots of people who love their Axim's getting together.
Sure the rebates aren't working as well as some would like and order times are long for some, but hey, this is the first Pocket PC Dell has ever made. Remember, people come here to figure things out, ask questions and get frustration off their chests. If you opened a poll and asked people how they feel about their purchase 2 months later, you'll get some high marks.
I'm surprised too, this is a pretty positive place. There are always going to be whiners and some people really have had problems but nothing that you might not get with any other PPC. You did the right thing, it's the best PPC out there for the money and probably for any money. I love mine. I've had no problems this far, it arrived a couple of days early and the only call I had to make was about my rebate and it took less than 3 minutes from dialing to problem solved.
I use mine for everything from keeping track of my schedule, reading books, listening to music, my textbooks are on it, I track my assigments on it etc. I'm really busy with working, school, family, church and this thing has been great about helping keeping everything organized.
Thanks for the replies.
Yes, though, I do get that feeling. Perhaps its just the posts I choose to read but its a lot of things: screen brightness, Dpad, syncing, customer service, compatability, lack of software, processor speed, etc. etc. I hope I will be happy (mine says delivery date 2/26 <purchased 2/16> knock on wood) I guess I need to stop reading the bad posts and read the good ones. I dont think I'll be too bad of a complainer, I'll just feel really important having and using one. Thanks again for the positives. I'll post when mine comes.
When you finally get your Axim, don't create a lot of problems for yourself.
don't CREATE problems ... get it?
Follow the instructions.
Read the manual.
Don't second-guess the instructions.
Don't load in just everything you can find.
Learn how to use it first, and understand how it works, before you go modifying it to the point of failure.
Like any computer, be methodical and keep a log of everything you install or change. When it's stable, make a full backup on your PC.
What's the worst that can happen? You are 1 out of 1000 who has a hardware problem, so you get a replacement. BFD

The other thing to realize as well, that no matter what PDA you choose, there will always be something that some persons have to complain about.
I don't know one pocket pc on the market in which there is 100% positive reviews...just look up the Toshiba e740 problems, even the allmighty Ipaq have there detractors.
Overall, you will find that the Axim has a substantially greater positive review than negative....and that most of the negative reviews deal with customer service rather than the product itself

No matter what product is out on the market there are always gonna be people who hate it. Like APPLE COMPUTERS i mean i hate anything apple, but there are people who would never use a PC. Another words its just what people prefer, I bet once you get that baby you will love it EXCEPT for the fact that you will have to wait 4 EXTRA hours to poke around it!

We have been using Dell PCs at my company for several years and have had excellant support from Dell. Sure, problems will come up at times, but remember Dell is new to the PocketPC game and the Axim is selling faster than they were set up to handle it. The Axim offers more features than anything in it's price range.
I am confident Dell will catch up soon. You don't get to be one of the few computer manufacturers that are showing a good profit by screwing your customers.
As far as waiting, naahh, There will always be newer and better products coming out. In the PC business people who wait for products to be perfect will never get to buy anything :D
Be glad you made the plunge and enjoy your great PDA.
you will love it EXCEPT for the fact that you will have to wait 4 EXTRA hours to poke around it!
..AND i DO loVE IT...QUESTION THOUGH:
I know it says 'charge it for at least 4 hours' initially....how long is BEST.....5, 6, 8? What would happen if I charged for less?

I remember a college professor once telling my marketing class, that a person with a product problem will tell an average of 50 people about their trouble. . . . a person with a product success will usually tell less than 10 people.
I once had a car dealer cheat me out of a $100 deposit. See, look at all of you people I just told about the business problem I had! (probably skewed the professor's statistic off the charts)
Anyway, when I read this Aximsite forum containing people's product opinions, I figure that there must be around 5 times the number of un-reported product success' for every problem noted. Which means a bunch of people are having virtually no problems with their Axims and loving them. (okay, my scientific statiscal theories may be flawed - please don't confuse me with any real facts!)
I'm one of those people - my success with the Axim has been nearly flawless! I'm doing Word docs, playing with Excel files, reading my email, playing games, looking at digital photos, reading eBooks, making up new "Today Themes", and of course keeping contacts and my calendar.
Get your Axim, be patient with your "learning curve", and realize that there's an answer for nearly everything (except for the slightly "mushy" d-pad buttion!)
Ax is my first PDA. How the hell did I ever get along without one?
My only regret has nothing to do with the AX. It's with Pocket Excel. I do lot's of charts and they don't show up at all in Pocket Excel.
Where did you get the idea that there is a lack of software? I have tons of software for my Axim. I am also in college. I have had my Axim for two months now with no problems. I love it.  :D
