Create a directory on the SD Card called My Documents, then copy the music files into that. The Media player should find them there.

are the mp3s on your axim's main memory?

if so, go to programs > file explorer and use the drop down menu to select "my device."

you should be able to see "SD Card" if your SD card is in the slot.

if you know where your music files are (probably in "mydevice/my documents"), then drag and select them, then hold down the stylus on the selection until you get a little menu, then select copy (or cut).

go back to "my device" and now select SD card. after it opens, tap in the white part of the screen and hold the stylus there until you get the menu again and then select "paste."

now your mp3s are on your memory card.

yeah, a fully functioning SD card should not require any directories at all.
