I picked up Pocket Streets at the local Frys' Electronics for "free". Works really well. There are loads of other software packages out there, but since I got Pocket Streets, I haven't had the need to try others.

I'm stoked about Mapopolis
I would definately try that out. I'm not a big fan of Pocket Streets. I guess because I got a 2000 version with Windows ME and couldn't use it with my handspring. Now I get my Axim and I can't use it with that either. They want like $30 for 2003 when I was never able to use the 2000 version? Bah humbug, Microsoft doesn't make Mapopolis, that's enough reason for me. It looks superior as well. Just my .02

I would have to recommend a software called Mapopolis. The software is free, and you only pay a small fee for the maps that you want. Most of the maps are anywhere from 300K to 600K big, so they don't take up much room on your memory card, or where ever you decide to place them.
Take a look, I think you'll like it.

I second that - Mapopolis ( http://www.mapopolis.com/) is *the best* software out there, and I've used Pocket Streets.
HTH,
Nick

You best bet is to demo some of these programs. The problem with Mapopolis is that my house/road isn't on it even though its been 2 years since I've built it.

That's bad... I would never use a mapping software that does not list my own house!!! :p
I like the Mapopolis anyway... It's a great piece of software... I have my own complain, however. The driving direction never never never seems to work efficiently. Not sure what kind of algorithm they use... but it misses out major highways most of the times and suggest that I take a bunch of local roads... :(

Hesse, I would venture that you have the "shortest" not "fastest" route option set. Tools/Settings/Navigation Options/Route is where that is selected.
Sometimes it's fun to let Mapopolis take you the shortest route, if you have the time. You get to see places you wouldn't ordinarily go.

Oh I agree, I just can't belive they don't have my street while most online mapping companies do. I'm the last guy to say buy Microsoft believe me, but as I said, "free" (cost - rebate) isn't a bad way to go.

cageyjames, which version of map are you using? If you PM me your address, I can look on the Navigator version. The lower cost versions come from a different source. My navigator has roads less than a year old on it.
