Back-Up Battery

Hi, Anyone know of any decent, cheap sites (UK pref) for a new back-up battery? I could go to a shop in the city centre, but I really can't be bothered. Rather do it online (lazy I know) Mine is dying, not sure how as my ax main battery has never discharged...

Cheers

I assume that you have an X5. The CR2032 battery costs less than £2.00 in the UK. If you buy it on line the delivery charge would cost more than the battery!

They are available from any electrical store. Suggets that you try Dixons, Currys or PC World websites.

I didn't know they were that cheap, was expecting to pay about a fiver or so. Any idea why it drains so quickly?

They may not, in fact, be draining at all. First, you could be getting a false report of low battery. The 2002 version of the OS in particular was notorious for reporting a low backup battery when there was in fact nothing wrong with the battery. This happened to me.

The other possibility (which has also happened to me) is just a bad connection between the backup battery and its contacts. Make sure the battery itself is clean and not oily from your fingers, and make sure it is firmly seated to its contacts. Some members have gently bent the contacts to make them press tighter to the battery; I have put a small piece of pasteboard behind the battery to keep it in better contact.

You do not say how long you have had it for. It should last at least six months.

It may well not be "dying". The utility that shows the battery charge is notoriously unreliable. There are masses of threads on Aximsite about this.

The first thing to try is to remove the battery and gently bend up the two spring connectors at the bottom and one at the side. Then make sure that the battery is clean and dust free before re-inserting it. It must be a tight fit and it can help to put a small folded piece of paper under the cover.

But as they are so cheap, it is not a bad idea to fit a new one in any case. If it gives the same charge level as your present battery then keep it as a spare.
