Ok, I finally decided to set up ActiveSync and try installing programs to my Axim last night. One question I have though, should I install the applications to the built-in storage or the main memory... what is the difference?

Isn't the built-in storage just a set amount of memory that will always be saved for applications? If I install an application to main memory, it will place the application in a folder directly under My Device, correct?

Oh, if only life were that simple!

Built-in storage is left over ROM storage that Dell has made available for us to use. Stuff that goes there will survive a hard reset. So, it seems tempting to put programs there, right? But the catch is that the Registry gets reset with a hard reset, so any program in Built-in that requires entries in the registry or installed .dlls won't run anyway! So, I use Built-in to hold some critical files I don't want to lose, and that might be useful at hard reset time (registration info for programs, passwords for files, etc, etc). You could, I suppose, use the Built-In to hold the installation files and .cabs to restore the more important programs, too. I haven't tried that.

Installing an application to main memory will install it wherever the installer is set to put it. Sometimes that's in a folder under My Device, sometimes in /programs, sometimes in /windows/programs and sometimes multiple locations (PocketMapNavigator seems to spray stuff all over the place, for example).

Another good use is for large programs (over a meg) like Lectionary. I personally would not put data files in flash. You get a lot of erase/write cycles out of flash these days, but the number of cycles is still limited. Why tempt the fates?

OK, so, I got too excited and installed too many programs in main memory.

Comes time to delete them and I use the Remove Programs Feature.

Does memory pretty well clean up it’s self, or is it recommended to use some sort of defragmenter program after deleting (relatively) lots of stuff?

A hard reset does not seem like the best way to gain space back, but I've done it a few times now.

Rich Libby, I do the same thing :) I feel kind stupid, I just installed a lot of programs in the built in memory, oops !! I already did a couple of hard reset myself to get rid of some program files I could not find. I know it's not the best way to do things but it just feels so clean afterwards :) Anyway, does anyone know how to remove those program files that are now in the registry from all those program?? I wish I would of read these posts before doing that. Oh well

I know nothing about registry and things like that, I just rad about it in some post on this site. I am however very comfortable with file explorers and detailed explanantions if anyone has any for me to follow. I'll try pretty much anything, worst case senario, I'll just do another hard reset :)

Thanks everyone

Man, I'm so glad for this site !! I have learned so much from surfing the forums :)

Is it usefull to make some ROM backup (to CF or PC) before writing to it. Is it possible that i will make some changes in ROM which can't be removed. Is there any way to return unit to Factory defaults - including ROM?
