Home network - Wifi - how to browse my desktop?
I have a Linksys WiFi router and just received my Axim and Netgear MA701. I can browse the internet, get email, but I can't seem to browse the network. I want to be able to access files from my desktop that is on the network. How can I go about mapping a drive.

Is your ax and desktop on the same sub-net?
Cheers.

Not quite sure what "sub-net" is, but I can browse any pc on my home network from any pc in the house. For example, I can browse my shared "D" drive (on my desktop pc) from my laptop.

I'm assuming you're using your WiFi router to assign all the IP's for your desktop, notebook, and Ax? If you are, then it should.
In that case, try to find out the IP of your Ax (If you're using the DHCP server from your WiFi router, go into the configuration and check the DHCP lease table).
After you have found the IP of your Ax, do a ping in command prompt by typing "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (where the xxx's is your Ax's ip). If you are not getting a response from your Ax, your Ax is not talking to your network. In which case we'll need more info to continue =) Goodluck.
Cheers.

Ok, the PING was a success.
Also, I downloaded a trial version of Resco Explorer 2003 and could see my desktop pc listed under the 'Network Neighborhood' icon, but I could not browse it. Nor could I map it. I got a message:
"A device with the same name is already on the network. Tap Start > Settings > System tab > About > Device ID tab, change your device name, and try again."
Note: I changed the device name of my desktop and tried this again - no luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

What happens if you change the name of your Ax?
Cheers.

Thanks.
Oh, and is there a way to ping my desktop from my Axim?

vxutil is a great program...
Lot's of fun IP tools...
I'd also recommend pockethosts, to help with name resolution issues...

What if you try to manually map ur desktop using IP instead? \\192.168.0.XXX\share ?
Just for experiment sake, forget about using internet for a while and just try to get ur network shares to work. Disable your DHCP server, and manually assign an IP to each of your clients, and then manually map the drives using IP. See if that resolves the 'same name conflict'.
Cheers.

Get vxutil and try pings.
Ping your pc by IP and then ping it by name..
If it succeeds by number but not by name, get pockethosts.
P.S. What type of PC is this?
Do you have File and Print Sharing Enabled? Do you have a share?? (Not administrative)
(Just asking.. :-)
I've used PocketLan and Netuse both with success to a 98se machien with sharing enabled..

Thanks to everyone for their help!! I don't know why, but it's working fine now. I changed the Axim's name 3 times, changed shared drive name, user accts, passwords, etc. Finally working.
Thanks again.

Glad you got it working!
I was just going through the previous thread, and another member had the EXACT problem as you. He didn't do anything other than changing the device name. I guess you just gotta keep beating the problem with the same solution a few times LOL!
Cheers.
