How do I know if I have a type I or type II CF Slot?

you have both.

type II is also always type I (but type I is not always type II), and you have type II.

How do you know? James doesn't give any indication of why he's asking. He may have an X3 and have no CF slot.

James, the main difference between a CF-I and -II are the thickness of the card. Type II cards are 5mm thick while type Is are 3mm. Thus, as Astounded indicated, a type II slot can hold either type while a type I can only hold a type I (since a 5mm card will not fit into a 3mm slot). If you have an X5, you do have a type II slot and any card will work.
