CF, SD, or CF Microdrive?
I just bought an X5, and it should be here by early next week. I've got plans to use it for Mapopolis (vacation map is invaluable), mp3s & reading on my daily commute, and probably some gaming / media.

The question is, which media card should I get? CF is half the price of an SD card for the same storage capacity. Any benefits to either one that I should be aware of?

If I want a card that'll work in my jumpdrive trio, I'm stuck with SD.

Thanks

Presuming you have an X5, you may want to go with SD (or a large capacity CF/microdrive). In case you're unaware, the SD slot on the X5 can only be used for memory (not devices like a camera, wifi card, etc.). The CF slot on the other hand accepts both media and devices. In you plan on using wifi, you'll need your CF free, same with bluetooth, a camera, etc. I personally went with SD, which you can find decent deals for if you can shop around.

But if you want large memory, CF or microdrives are much cheaper than comprable SD cards. SD is dropping, but CF is still cheaper.

to me it really depends on how much memory your planning on buying if your just geting a small amount its cheap either way plus with the sd your getting smaller card that will with your trio to but if your getting 512 or above i would go cf till the prices go down

So basically, there are no big differences b/w CF and SD other than cost and size?

Thanks

(I'll probably end up buying a pair of 256Mb SD cards)

No big differences in the cards, but there are big differences in the slots in your X5. The SD slot is not an IO slot, while the CF slot is. That means that if, for example, you want a GPS unit to go with your Mapopolis maps, you can buy units that go into your CF slot but not any that go into the SD slot. If you want to sync or surf the net wirelessly, you'll do that with a WLAN card in your CF slot. If you want any of a number of other addons (modems, cameras, ir extenders, whatever), they will all take your CF slot. That means that any programs or data you have stored on a CF card won't be available while you are using these other accessories, while programs or data that are on an SD card will be available for use.

I guess there is one big difference in the cards, too: CF is apparently on the way out, at least for pocket pcs. All the newest pocket pcs have sd slots; few have CF slots. That's something to think about, too.

actually some of the "new" high end PDA's like the ipaq hx4700 will be dual slot. CF is FAR from on the way out.

512meg SD will run you about $120, then use the CF slot for your GPS, wifi, or another 512meg($70 for CF) depending on what you need.

basically think of the SD slot as an internal "user upgradeable" memory option, its the great thing about dual slots ;-)

I am new user of X5 as well and wanted to buy a SD card, but heard that there are limitations on some cards in reference to my want to use the SD card for mp3 play back and such. Can someone expound on this issue if it is true? Is there limitations of function for other things I should be aware of?

hmm take a peek here
http://sdprob.aximsite.com/

there is also the issue that SD support multiple access methods (kind of like USB 1.0, USB 1.1, USB2.0).
so on some devices SD access is quite slow, I have an X5 and have no problem with all my apps (not plugins tho)loaded up on the SD card, even movies and mp3's are no problem.
I have lexar SD card for what its worth.
