To format or not to format

My question is whether I should format my X5 or some how clean out the dead end programs. After trying out several trial wares and deleting them I now have a bunch of icons that do nothing. Can any one help me format the X5 or clean it out? Thanks, Freddb3

you can delete the icons in \Windows\Start Menu\Programs, and from there you get to Games too.

you can also try a bunch of apps, and after a few months when you have figured out what you really want on your Axim, you can do a hard reset and install only what you want, getting a fresh install of everything, (this is really more than you need, but it will also clean your registry).

I normally do a hard reset and fresh install every 6 months or so just to clean out the dead wood... It takes some time but it's worthwhile. I also have a "clean" restore which I keep so I can go back a near factory configuration but with a bunch of applications installed already.

I like howards theory. I heard someon say many years ago that its good practive to wipe out a desktop PC @ least once a year to get rid of all the junk. I ended up starting from scratch after applying the A02 ROM upgrade last night. Although it took some time, I have more free space in my main memory.

When you do a hard reset are you also wiping off the OS? And if you are do you have to first install PPC2002 then upgrade it to PPC2003 or can you go straight to PPC2003? And it looks like I have been able to clean out the dead end programs by going through Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

A hard reset will wipe everything except the OS and take it back to the way it was when you first got it. Unless you upgraded from 2002 to 2003 then your hard reset will take you to 2003 when you first did the upgrade! Hope this helps!

That great to hear, I won’t have to go through the process of the PPC03 upgrade again. Thanks Freddb3

What about programs I've installed, like POCKET MECHANIC. Will I have to find the registration code and re-enter it? Or will it automatically be there?
Thanks for bringing up the subject, by the way.

You'll have to re-enter all of your registration information after a hard reset. It's not a problem except where you have a machine ID for certain applications like 'Exit Nights' or 'MobiPocket.' For application like those, you'll have to contact the software manufacturer for assistance.

For apps like Pocket Mechanic, you should have received a code via email from Handango or PocketGear. THis is where you will find the code for such apps.
