ActiveSync'ing of Files
Experienced the wonderful world of "dude, I decided to drain your battery last night!" feature of the X5 and have spent the morning trying to get everything working.
One area that still won't function is the sync'ing of files. ActiveSync tells me that the files aren't compatible, re-connect and try again. This, of course, never resolves anything.
I've tried creating a new connection (and deleting th old), thinking that the PC has gotten confused since I had to start from scratch on the X5, but that hasn't worked.
Any ideas out there?
Also, BACK UP YOUR DATA OFTEN! On the PC, CF Card, the SD Card take your pick. For who knows when the battery gremlin will strike!

Yep. Several times. I also tried creating new connection profiles (i.e., deleting partnerships and creating new ones). Nothing works to fix the file sync'ing problem. Everything else sync's just fine.
Next step, removing activeSync from the PC and reinstalling it from scratch.

Uninstalled ActiveSync and re-installed the software from the Dell companion CD. It still shows that action is required to correct the problem. When I select resolve items, it tells me to disconnect my device and re-connect it as some file types are not sync-able.
Upgraded to ActiveSync version 3.6 and have the same problem.
I about this close to giving up! ActiveSync sucks!

Yep it sucks. Now, moving on...
Why sync files? I just use Eplorer and drag'n'drop to move files back and forth. It's not automatic like sync, but then again it works. I have discovered through 5 Windows CE PDAs that the LESS you do with Activesync, the better.
To drag'n'drop, just plop the Ax in the cradle, let A/S connect, then open Explore on the PC A/S. Now you can use File Explorer on the PC and it will be able to see all of the Axim folders, even those on the SD and CF cards. You can drag'n'drop or cut'n'paste just like it was any other folder.
Oh, and then remember to remove the X from the box beside "files" on the Options page. All I sync are Contacts, Calendar and Tasks.

JakeRich,
Thanks for the advice, I normally use that approach to move files between the systems. I just have trouble walking away from PC/PDA problems that shouldn't exist (drives my wife nuts!).
I'll take a deep breath today and pretend the file sync'ing feature doesn't exist.

Yes, my wife refers to that particular attribute as "conquer mode" and she delights in pointing out whenever I enter it! :p

Are you sure your pc sync file does not contain any hidden files. I assume you have deleted the contents of both files and tried a sync.

I deleted the PC folder that ActiveSync created on my desktop and tried to clean out the PDA's my Documents folder as best I could before trying again.
I was surprised to find the Templates folder protected on the PDA. By that I mean I cannot delete it (although it appears empty).
If I hard reset the system and restore a back-up file, does everything return to the way it was, or am I forced to reload all of my software?

I have a question on how ActivSync handles the way it updates files.
I added some Excel files through the desktop activsync module to my Axim and they now show up on my laptop in the PocketPC_My Documents, directory as well as in the My Documents directory. (Duplication of files) They only problem with this is: now when I add or delete from the Excel files, in my Axim, the changes to the files are not applied to the original files on my laptop in "My Documents" and when I alter the Axim files, the changes only show up on the files that are in the laptop directory PocketPC_My Documents, not the original files in "My Documents" directory. I am afraid this duplication will lead to data loss. How can I get the files down to one copy?
Thanks, LaSmooz

Try putting the "real" copy of the file in the PocketPC_My Documents folder, then put a shortcut to that file in the My Documents folder. If that works, when Excel saves the file it will not save the shortcut, it will actually save the "real" file. It's worth a try, anyway.

If anyone knows how to keep just one directory of files, it would save on disk space!! As of now I have My Documents and I have PocketPC_MyDocuments, all duplicate files.
Thanks for the assistance, LaSmooz

Well I finally got the File sync'ing to work. Here's what I did for those who may be experiencing a similar problem.
When you select (by checking the box in options) to sync files, make sure you click the settings and add some files to sync right away. You can always delete them later.
When I did this ActiveSync transferred the files from the PC to the PDA and vice versa.
Originally, I didn't place any files on the PC to transfer, so instead of moving the PDA files to the PC, it responded with an error (files couldn't be moved, disconnect and reconnect again...).
I haven't a clue why my set-up needed to be primed to begin working, but I've given up trying to understand how the wonderful minds at Microsoft work.
