I just use Windows Media Player to convert my cd's to WMA files, put them on a 256 meg SD card and use the player in Windows PPC to play them on the Axim.
I use MusicMatch Jukebox to convert my CD's to 128 mp3's. I alw
ys transfer to my SD card with a storage card reader.
The sound quality on the X30/624 is comfortably accurate through WMP. A tad lacking in bass response though.
That will be my project for today, testing mp3 players on my device. Thanks for the interesting topic.

I use MusicMatch to convert to 96 mp3s (so I can get more on my CF card.) The sound quality at 96 is fine for me, but I did find 64 wasn't quite good enough for my taste.
I also use a card reader for transfer to the card from the PC.
On the Axim I use GSPlayer which is free and (IMO) handles adding files to playlists better than WMP. It also has a basic equalizer that allows you to adjust the music to your tastes.
PocketMusic is another free one (for the mp3 version...there is an upgrade that you pay for which has additional features and can play wma files.) I find that I get "crackling" like I was playing a vinyl record when I use this one. Sure, it's nostalgic, but that's not what I'm looking for! I have friends who use this one though without any problem, so it may just be something with my system working with PocketMusic.
I compared a couple of third party mp3 players over at the site I moderate at. Here's a link to the thread.

Wow! This one's out of the vaults. My previous link doesn't work anymore because Pocket PC Passion no longer exists. It died an ignomious death at the hands of a service provider that didn't do backups. I never thought all that passion wpuld just disapper.

The bass response can be corrected through an equalizer. I have found that the biggest problem with playing MP3s through the Azim is actually the dynamic range. I have converted the sinus tones of a test CD to MP3 files (with high sampling and bitrate, etc.) and played these test tones through the X50v, comparing this with the original CD which was playing in my CD player. Both the X50v and my CD player were hooked to my rack system and listened through my Grado headphones. The bass of the two machines were similar and extended to as low as 20hz. However, comparing music tracks, the X50v dynamic range was clearly more limited - and this was especially noticable in the bass region.
I wonder if Dell limit the dynamic range intentionally so that we can hear the music fully - including the quieter passage - in noisy environments (trains, cars, streets, etc.). There used to be audio processers used for compressing dynamic range so to accomplish just this.
Give that a try with the X50mix hardware equalizer control by emulamer installed Dik. It's only for the X50v and I think you'll be pleasently surprised by the results with WMP for PPC.

I love real world testing over quality eqiupment. Thanks for the update Dik.
