Activesync is Acting Weird

I log onto my limited account in XP Pro and my Ax beeps telling me it is checking for new contacts, etc. When I did have new contacts they transfered and went into outlook ok. I haven't the past few times and the Ax will beep, sync and check, then disconnect. I verified this in activesync on the AX. it tells me the last time it synced (usually within the past min or 2), and the stop sync is grayed out and unclickable. Although on my laptop I still have the green activesync circle spinning in the system tray. I double click it and it shows the status window with the green circle spinning and says "conecting..." I do not know what it is trying to connect to? I am thinking the internet but I don't really know. So now I go into activesync on the Ax again and click "sync". I get an error window stating ""trouble connecting, unable to connect with current settings." Also on my laptop when I try CTRL+ALT+DEL activesync is not showing up in the running programs list eventhough it is showing activity in my system tray. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Check your firewall. Those symptoms are consistent with a firewall blocking the TCP/IP from the Ax to the PC. Activesync uses TCP/IP for communications, and if the firewall is set too tight it will prevent those connections because it thinks the Axim is trying to get out to the Internet.

Thanks I'll try fooling with the settings of my firewall though I'm not to keen on how all the settings in it work. I have ZoneAlarm and I allow both activesync and connection manager access as server and to internet.

ZoneAlarm is known to interfere with Activesync. Before you mess with the settings, just kill it and see if activesync works. If it does, then restart ZA and try to get the settings you need. Maybe somebody here with ZA can get you started with that.

Good luck with it.

JakeRich is right, I must have seen 20 posts on zonealarm problems on this forum. Try a search on zonealarm.

Ok so Zonealarm was sort of the problem. I disabled it and syncing is better. But I still think there is a problem, when I stop the sync through A/S on the Ax it stops. If I try to restart it it doen't connect and I get the all famous **Trouble connecting with your current settings** and it won't sync. If I go to A/S on my laptop and do "Get Connected" a box comes up saying checking COM ports/looking for a mobile device, and after it checks them I get a **Your device was not detected **. If I take the Ax off the cradle then put it back on it syncs but comes up withthe New Partnership window. Any sugesstions as to what the problem is?

**Edit**
One more issue with syncing that I had a question about. I can only stop syncing from my ax, not activesync on my laptop. Is that how it should be?

Thanks

I think thats just the way it is, I guess the ideal is you stay connected. I can reconnect by turning the axim on and off, a little easier than disconnecting.

I believe that is the case, because the act of connecting the Axim loads the drivers, which opens Active Sync on the PC. Even closing AS on the PC will not unload the driver or terminate the connection.
You should just undock the Axim or pull the USB cable out to stop syncing. I've had a bit of trouble re-establishing sync if the Axim is turned off while connected, forcing me to reboot the PC before it would function again.
