Lots of Syncing Issues

I've been having a hell of a time trying to sync. I installed activesync 3.5 then uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, then uninstalled it again, and then I downloaded and installed 3.6, but that wasn't any better. The first time after installing activesync it works ok transfering tasks and contacts(this has happened everytime I reinstalled it), then it won't work again unless I uninstall and reinstall. If and when it has worked, I then hit explore in activesync and I can't see or move any files in or out of My Device. I then got an error telling me to try and restart to fix the problem, and if that doesn't work to reinstall activesync. Well I restarted and it didn't help. Although when it restarted the my ax beeped like it was syncing, and showed that as the last sync , but on my laptop all I got was the green spinning activesync logo in my system tray that was trying to connect, as I explained in my other post Located Here. I also tried syncing by initiating the sync from the ax, but that gave me a "trouble connecting" error. I don't know what the problem is but I'm starting to get frustrated.

Update: I unplug and replug my cradle and I get a connection back. Activesync looks to make sure contacts and such are up tp date, but when I click explore in activesync the error is " Critical communications services have failed to start. To fix...BLAH BLAH restart or reinstall." The whole time the Ax is still synced with my computer until I click stop on the AX. What should the setting be for the ax and for the main computer? I'm wondering if I fooled with settings and screwed something up.

Any help is appreciated.

It sounded like you have the Axim docked when you start and stop the PC. Don't connect it if the PC is not up and running already. Remove it from the cradle/sync cable before shutting the PC down.
You may want to hard reset the Axim to make sure the sync program is not corrupted. Did you have the Axim docked when you installed Active Sync? It should not be connected untill after the installation is complete.
Further problems are usually due to weakness in the PC USB system. Some users have reported a USB socket works a printer OK, but won't handle the Axim for some reason, and changing sockets or adding a USB expansion card fixed everything.

The only problem I've ever had is when my PC went to suspend while docked. The Axim turned off too instead of staying awake like it usually does, and when I woke up the system, it would not sync. I had to reboot the PC, and then redock the Axim, before it would reconnect.

The order in which you install, run, and sync is important.

hey mike,good info there,but can i take u back a few steps? i have the same problem here,but i cant even get a connection from ax to pc. i hear the ax "beep beep" like it trys to connect,then real fast,it shuts down. i need some1 to walk me thru all the settings to find host/proxy/and all that crap,my wife played with it for 5 hours last night and cant figure out what all the settings should be..i too reinstalled act.sync and get nothing but the green spinning logo,and says no partnership,,do i need to change somethin on the pc settings or on the ax. my ax error says...verify dialup or proxy settings r correct and try again. error code: CONNMGR_36
thanks to ANYONE who can help....and be patient with me!!

---by the way....im using windows xp...will it sync with axim???

and it works just fine. Never had a problem except I had to take it out of the cradle this morning after my DH logged into his account first and for some reason the AX logged itself on as a guest in his account. Then when I logged into my account it wouldn't connect. Took it out of the cradle, put it back in and everything is fine. And I have never had a problem with it switching back and forth between accounts as long as I log into my account first when the AX is connected.

So maybe you have an account problem? Are you installing Active Sync without anything else connected, the cradle not plugged in, etc. That seems to make a huge difference.

I guess I just wanted you to know that you can have a successful connect with either AC 3.5 or 3.6 in XP.

If you use a firewall, shut it down and try again. Open the Active Sync window on your PC first so you can say what it does there.

With the Ax connected, right click on My Computer, select Properties, Hardware, Device Manager.
Probably down at the bottom of the list that opens should be "Windows CE USB Devices", and clicking on the "+" will expand it to show "Dell Axim USB Sync".

If the driver shown there has a warning sign, or is not there at all, you either have a bad USB connection, or the driver is missing or invalid.

The problem with seeing the driver status is that it disappears when you un-dock the unit, and it won't come up if you have a bad connection. Gnome sane? Just because you don't see it doesn't mean you don't have it.

As far as settings go, you shouldn't have to make any settings ... at least in my case, I took it out of the box, installed active sync, docked it and it worked fine from the get-go.

Let me/us know if anything here helped. Or not.

thanks again mike,,i did the walk thru as u stated above,all shows as u stated,,i am not able to mess with the firewall stuff,thats all on my wifes server...."dont touch!!"

when i put the ax in the cradle it says connecting to host and a second later it shuts down and reverts back to the start screen,if i click on act/sync it says not connected,tap the sync tap on screen...same thing...the pc just site and spins..trying to connect.
oh well...looks like we r in for another 130am night....yawn!!
