Sync with exchange server? What is VPN?
I'm getting tired of this sync/networking thing.
Can someone explain me how to set up my X30 to synchronize mail, using my exchange server, when i connect it using the supplied cable?
I have set up all server/logon info correct, but whenever i syncronize, some error message pops up talking about VPN and stuff. As far as i understand, it is trying to connect using a wireless connection? (IR, bluetooth, WLAN?). When it is already connected to my computer (which is on the same network as the exchange server, and also have outlook running connected to exchange), why does it do that?
How can i fix this? If i have to use WLAN to synchronize, how do i set up that?

I'm synching my Axim through my compter (not wireless) which in turn connects to an exchange server. My exchange server requires me to connect through a VPN (Virtual Private Network) for authentication/security purposes. A VPN is a secure connection that allows point-to-point connectivity to a distant network over the internet. You'll probably have to talk to your exchange/network admins to see what the VPN settings are.
I didn't have the VPN set up on my Axim, so I just tried to set it up. I first went into settings and selected "edit my VPN servers." From there I clicked on new and entered my information. Then after enabling my WLAN, I clicked on the connectivity icon up top, and clicked on "connect VPN" I didn't try to sync my mail, but I was able to find the settings under the activesync tools options. Let me know if this helps...

Thanks fo your reply!
But I am the Exchange/network admin...
On my client computer, i use Outlook 2003 to connect to the exchange server (the server i set up). Isn't it possible to have my PDA connect to that server the same way Outlook is doing it? Just by entering server name/ip, and username/password?
I have tried setting up VPN on my axim, without success. I guess that is because i have no experience with VPN, and therefore can't have set up my VPN on my server...

I have now made a bluetooth dial-up connection to my phone. When i synchronize, that connection is automaticly used, and everything works (and my phone bill increases dramaticly GPRS).
How can i make it either use WLAN, or use the cable connection to synchronize?

I went through and did a couple of things messing around and I noticed that if you had anything in the server section of ActiveSync, that it did look for a VPN (which is what I'm assuming you were trying). I tried to sync my mail wirelessly back to my exchange server and it kept erroring out both with and without the VPN. I did get different error messages depending on if I was connected through the VPN, so that tells me that I should have been through the front door.
I was able to sync wirelessly to my home box that is connected to the exchange server, but I don't think this helps your problem.

Ok, I read back through and I might have been over-complicating some stuff. Are you saying that you can't sync with your e-mail in your home computer?

Uhm..
I guess there are two ways to sync:
1. Sync with Outlook
2. Sync directly with exchange server.
It think #1 will work, but if I do not have access to my computer, but have access to WLAN (internet) i want to syncronize with the exchange server directly. That is the problem, because it tries to connect to the server using my bluetooth phone, instead of using the WLAN connection.

I see what you're saying in regards to #2. I'm unsure how the bluetooth connection works (dial-up into the server, or ISP??). I'm going to have to try to do some experimenting remotely and see if I can figure it out...

To Sync with Outlook your desktop needs to be connected to the VPN (Exchange Server)
If you want to directly Sync to the Server you need to setup the VPN on the PPC.

There several issues discussed here.
1) from a connection (wired or Bluetooth) to the desktop, you can sync to either Outlook or Exchange.
2) from a WiFi AP INSIDE your network, you can sybc to exchange
3) from a connection OUTSIDE your network, unless the exchange server is exposed to the internet, and the correct ports are open, you will need to open a VPN connection to tunnel into your network before syncing to exchange

I got it working now. Not 100% what i wanted, but when i open activesync on my X30, and tap "syncronize" it automaticly uses the WLAN connection to synchronize with my server. I guess it goes directly via network, and not via internet.
Thank you for your replies :)
