Strange sound quality

Forgive me for this silly question. Never used mp3 files before and downloaded a cd onto my axim3i. Sound quality is dire sounding a bit like a phaser or flanger. Used headphones and sound is still bad. Using Windows Media and at the top it has the title of the track and 16kbps.

the 16kpbs is your problem (unless that was a typo). most CDs record at 160 minimum, so you are only hearing every tenth bit, hence the bad quality. I have CDs that transfer as high as 400 Kbps, but the rate differs from disk to disk, and sometimes track to track.

in WMP on your PC, go to Tools | Options | Copy Music, and adjust the Audio Quality slider at the bottom to give you a better sounding sample. Take into account (obviously) the amount of music you want to store (PC or Axim or both) and the amount of free Hard Drive / SD space you have.
