Sorry if this sounds stupid, but what is this patch for?
Is it the big center button?
Does this make a "push down" an Enter/Select command?

Please explain..

You were correct. The D-Pad patch makes the D-Pad (the big round button :D ) act as enter.

It's obvious that the D-Pad is used to manipulate the cursur, but any downward motion does what, without the patch loaded?

Just curious, haven't received my Axim yet, still waiting, and waiting, and...

There is a difference between pressing down and pressing in. If you press down, then the cursor goes down, or in games your character goes down. The D-Pad patch is so that when you press the button in, it acts as enter.
