main memory vs built in vs storage vs...

hi guys...I've had my axim x30 mid for a little while now and there's still something I don't understand. I've read through the site, but I'm still a little confused. Here's my question:

whats the difference between all the different kinds of memory. I understand that we have 64 mb ram and 64 mb rom.

so the rom = built-in-memory
ram=main memory?

So when I look at the memory allocation, theres roughly 32 mb for the rom right? and 64 for main (storage and programs)..Is this right so far? well, why do I need the ability to allocate b/t storage and programs? another question is that when I did backups, it went to the storage area of main. I thought it would go to the built in storage since its rom?.... thanks guys!

ROM is where the OS is stored. By nature you cannot modify what is in ROM. The OS does not take up all os ROM. What is left over is what you can access. This is called Built-in Storage. This part of ROM memory is non-volatile and it will not get wiped out if a hard reset is done.

RAM is where your apps and data is stored. All PIM information is also in RAM. It is volatile memory and will get wiped if you do a hard reset. RAM is split into Storage and Program memory. Storage memory is the available memory in RAM for data and apps. Program memory is used to execute and run the programs on your device. Storage memory is like the HDD on your desktop and Program memory is like the memory SIMMS that is in your desktop. Memory is required to run apps.

Hope that explanation clears things up for you.

You can install software or store files (e.g., backups, mp3s, etc.). Keep in mind, however, if you install software here, links to it and registry entries will be wiped out following a hard reset.

And if you store sensitive information there, someone can hard reset and still get to your sensitive info.

Technically, you cannot store anything to that 30 MB of ROM, since ROM stands for Read Only Memory. It cannot be written to. You can only access what is already there, ie the O/S and the Progs that Dell burned to it.
