I am going to buy a new PDA within a month and still don't know if I want a Sony SJ30 running Palm O/S or a pocket PC. From what I see, If I get a pocket PC it will be a Dell Axim but I really like the Sony. Why did y'all pick pocket PC over Palm O/S?
I picked PocketPC because I was done with PalmOS. PalmOS is not bad, but I have to believe that if "Bill" wants the PDA market to use his OS ... All software companies will march in an army of Bill Gates Followers.
I picked the Dell obviously because of the value factor.
My 4 cents <---everyone else is less than that...usually 2 cents

About a month ago I saw an ad for a Palm m105 for $80 and figured what the hey..for that price I can drop it in the junk drawer if I don't like it.
I didn't like the idea of replacing batteries but for $80 bucks?
Well it was a discontinued item and none could be found. By then I was intregued and after looking around I had settled on the Sony sl20 for $180.
Rechargable battery, Hi-rez Monochrome and 8 meg of RAM. I was set...
until a flier dropped out of the Sunday paper anouncing the Axim for $199.
I went with the Axim over the Palm m125 because the Dell has more memory, people seem to like the PPC2002 OS better than the Palm OS, and of course the value that Dell is offering. Dell has some issues with getting these things out, but I wouldn't hold that against them. :)
I picked the Axim because it's processor is a fast as my home PC and it's only $300. I have a two year old Palm, an boredom has set it. I mean, how long can you write "To Do" lists and play "Sub Hunt?"
I didn't choose. I actually had a Sony Clie N710C and an NR70. I LOVE the NR70 but was curious about PPC's after some of my friends starting talking up the Dell. I am still trying to decide which I prefer. I can't really say just yet. I am more at home with Palm OS than with Windows CE. Time will tell :)
Feature-for-feature, the Dell is a better deal than any Palm OS PDA, and most other Pocket PCs for that matter. Plus, the Pocket PC OS is multitasking, unlike Palm OS. You can type a document or spreadsheet and listen to MP3s at the same time with the Axim...no Palm OS PDA can do that. Low-end Palms are good for those who want a simple electronic datebook with a few extras. If you want more than that, the Pocket PCs are a better deal.
It basically came down to what gwiard just mentioned above. Plus I have a friend who has a Palm Vx, I just couldn't see myself being happy with a Palm device after using it. Although this is my first handheld, I am estatic about my choice.

Well, my story is almost identical to yours, MTW.
I bought a Clie, returned it the same day because it was defective. Decided I didn't want a mono screen, needed more memory than most of the $200 priced PDAs out there could give me. Waited till I saved a few bucks, was literally heading out the door to Best Buy to buy a Palm 515 when the mail got delivered. Took a phone call with my jacket on as I perused the Dell flier that came in the mail. Took my jacket off and started making phone calls to find a Dell Kiosk that I could play with this baby at. Drove over an hour to a mall in another state on Black Friday. Ordered it after it recognized my digital camera's CF card with not a bit of tech support needed.
Now, 4 weeks later, it's in my hot little hands (charging :::sigh:::) just as I'm out the door for the holiday. But I think it will be well worth the wait after all that I've heard about the pros and cons of different PDAs/PPCs.
2 years ago I received a Palm IIIxe for my birthday and I thought it was the coolest toy ever. Downloading monochrome games and playing on the yellow-tinged screen could not be beat. I used it to organize every aspect of my life and for entertainment as well. However, with virtually no music support (not even midi's!) I gradually lost interest. For the past 6 months it's been sitting in my backpack with almost no use.
2 weeks ago I was going to receive a Palm m515 for my birthday. The thought of being able to store pictures, play games, and organize my schedule in color was great, plus the size of the m515 was excellent. However, the screen was low-res and no music support. I wanted to use my pda as an mp3/mpeg player, so I backed away from the m515. Just as I was about to go find a Sony Clie that would fit my needs, I looked around on the web and found numerous reviews about Pocket PC's, the new Dell Axim in particular.
I received my Axim yesterday morning from UPS. It was ordered last Thursday night as the free shipping offer ended. I've been playing with it non-stop since then. Having played with Pocket Word and Excel, I think I will use this to take notes at lecture in school. I can also use it as my mp3 and mpeg video player! Not only that, but the games are awesome for PPC2002.
In the end what it came down to was bang for my (gift-giver's) buck. With a killer screen and killer apps available for download, the Dell Axim rises far above the rest of the crop of PDA's out there today, no matter the platform.
let's see..... power, speed multitasking, network access, features/$ i think that's about it
oh yeah, all my Dell products have performed in the past, so expect the same from my axim
I purchased a Palm IIIe over 3 years ago for $150 (excellent deal back then) and it was great. Organized my life, could browse web pages offline while the rest of my English class did nothing, could write & read emails, play games, and it lasted about a month on 2 AAA batteries. I want something more out of my PDA, and I looked at the Tungsten. It is small, has a color screen, but is very expensive and you have to purchase additional software in order to use all the hardware on it, such as playing MP3's. When I saw on Slashdot ( http://www.slashdot.org ) that the Dell Axim was being sold, I cehcked it out. It had everything I ever wanted from it plus more, and for an excellent price. Expandability on this Pocket PC is amazing. Offering expandability using an SD/MMC and Compact Flash slot.
The few things that I like about the Palm devices is they tend to be a little smaller, but I am not too concerned about that because the Dell Axim fits in my pocket fine. The OS is a little cleaner and simpler to use, but lacks the many more features the Pocket PC OS has. Palm also has a history because they were the first to come out with successful models people wanted to buy. That is why people still buy Palm devices, because everyone knows who they are. I personally think Palm has fell behind in the market, and they need to come up with a product that will wow consumers again. Every time I look at my Axim, I say "wow", because it is so powerful and can do so many things.
I'm a long time Palm user (Palm Pilot 500 / Palm Pilot Professional / Palm III) and my trusty Palm III was finally giving up the ghost, so I was off to find a new unit. I had the Sony NX70V (999.00 up here in Canada) and the IPAQ 5450 (1000.00+) in my sites as the two top contenders. When the Axim was released, I ordered it and have had it for about a month now.
I would have to say that the Palm OS is definitely more straightforward to use and WAY faster on the built in apps. The built in apps also work mor logically. For example, when you open a contact for viewing in Palm OS, pressing the up / down switch would change to the previous / next contact. PocketPC forces you to close the current contact and reselect the next one.
That being said, I am really getting used to my PocketPC. Moving files around between my laptop and my PocketPC is slick. The range of advanced full featured applications is impressive and the file compatibility with Windows file formats is great.
In a nutshell, if you want a GREAT personal organizer, Palms are typically cheaper, smaller, faster and excellent PIM functionality (I used Datebk5 which I sorely miss on WinCE). If you want reasonable PIM functionality with greater general computer like features, PocketPC is the way to go. I am VERY happy with my Axim and won't be looking back to Palm.
