Duplicate Sync'ed Files
I have a question on how ActivSync handles the way it updates files.
I added some Excel files through the desktop activsync module to my Axim and they now show up on my laptop in the PocketPC_My Documents, directory as well as in the My Documents directory. (Duplication of files) They only problem with this is: now when I add or delete from the Excel files, in my Axim, the changes to the files are not applied to the original files on my laptop in "My Documents" and when I alter the Axim files, the changes only show up on the files that are in the laptop directory PocketPC_My Documents, not the original files in "My Documents" directory. I am afraid this duplication will lead to data loss. How can I get the files down to one copy?
Thanks, LaSmooz

The Axim does not ordinarily create files in your PC My Documents ... only in the sync folder (which is located in My Documents). Files created on the PPC will be duplicated in the sync folder, and the Axim will only update (sync) files in the sync folder.

If you created those original files in My Doc, and then transferred them to the Axim with Explore or something, they would of course show up in the sync folder.

If you want files to be sync'd, the "originals" have to be saved to the sync folder. If you want to keep PC files in well-organized folders, you need a way to sync files between folders on the PC ... the originals wherever, and the copies to be sync'd to the Axim in the sync folder.

Well, there are a few things I don't follow about this syncing.
The ActiveSync created a folder called "Pocket_PC/ My Documents", on my desktop hard drive, as a sub folder to "My Documents" and I can delete files in the Pocket_PC folder, on my desktop, then do a "add" files from my desktop ActiveSyc utility, using the "My Documents" folder as the location to sync from and VILOA! the files are recreated back in the "Pocket_PC/My Documents" folder. If I alter a document in my desktop "My Documents" folder, it will not change the documents on my Axim. If I change a document on my Axim, in the "Pocket_PC/MyDocuments" folder, it will not change on my desktop.
This is duplication of the files and I know I can add a short cut in the "My Documents" file so I will be working with the documents in "Pocket_PC" directory, but I don't want to have Duplicate files. It would be so easy to make mistakes this way.
I have removed all files in the desktop active sync window, deleted all files in Pocket_PC directory and re-added the files using the desktop Activec Sync utility, using the correct directory, and this condition still repeats. HELP!
Thanks for your response, LaSmooz

If I alter a document in my desktop "My Documents" folder, it will not change the documents on my Axim.

That's right. The "My Documents" folder on your PC is NOT a sync folder. Only the contents of "Pocket_PC/My Documents" will synchronize.

do a(n) "add" files from my desktop ActiveSyc utility, using the (PPC) "My Documents" folder as the location to sync from and VILOA! the files are recreated back in the "Pocket_PC/My Documents" folder.

That is the nature of a sync file. After adding a file to the Axim via Active Sync, a copy is created on the desktop machine. It is created in the only folder you can sync to/with.

Well, I see your point, but if I change a file on the desktop, in the directory that I chose to add from, to the Axim, that file change still won't show on the corresponding file in the Axim.
I have in the desktop ActiveSync settings:
Sync Options/Settings/On /this Computer, Sync Files In This Folder: Documents and Settings\LaSmooz\My Documents:
it shows the directory in which the file resides, that I am changing, is located.
Under rules: I have "always replace the item on my device" .
The point is, the file that I chose to add to the Axim originaly, only existed in the My Documents directory. So wouldn't it make sense that this would be the file on the desktop, that you would choose to updated to? and not have to go to a new directory in order to updated the file?
It seems that once I add a file, through ActiveSync, to the Axim, I can no longer use the original file in the "My Documents" directory if I want the changes to show up on the Axim. I have to start using the "newly" created file in the "newly" created directory Pocket_PC\My Documents.
Some how, this seems like a recipe for disater to have to remember to start using the "new" file in order to prevent lost data.
Thanks for your help in this matter Mike. It's getting late and I'll wrestle with this later (when I get up) LaSmooz
