I am currently using DVD to Pocketpc by Makayama Media. You can get it at handango.com. I have been using it for 3 months and it has worked fine when converting my dvds to wmv.. It takes about 3 1/2 hours to encode a full length movie and that depends on how fast of a processor you computer has. I will admit that it will not encode on my desktop for some reason but it works fine on my laptop!. You had better have a sd card reader cause transferring through active sync takes for ever.

Make sure that you're AV and Firewall are switched off (disabled) when encoding, that should solve your problem. Obviously don't surf the web without protection and always practice safe Hex!

DVD to PPC is a bit memory hungry but a great programme, nonetheless. Just stop everything you don't need on your PC and go to the pub for a couple of hours while it's doing its thing.

aecbeetle,

I saw this post and it caught my attention so I downloaded "DVD to Pocket PC" as posted by BobQ and installed it. I had just rented a movie last night and popped it in to see if the software worked. The demo only allows for 5 minutes of encoding. It worked flawlessly! If I was one who took plane trips often then this would be the software for me. Encoding the 5 minutes of the movie took about 10 minutes total time with my Athlon 2200 w/512 ram so it is time consuming. If I were to use this regularly I'd let it run overnight. Very Very simple to use, no setup to speak of. I encoded at the normal setting and was amazed at the quality on my Axim X30. You can get the trail directly from the manufacturer here: http://www.makayama.com/dvdtopocketpc.html

They even advertise that they have a version for smartphones! What will they think of next?

Jogga, thanks for the advice but I think it might be more than that. I have closed every program just shy of shutting down my desktop but I think I might have a windows encoder problem. I will try it again maybe I missed something. Thanks again

Take a look at mMedia found here http://www.mdvd.ca/ it has a Free 2 day Try-It-ALL version, and is PPC2000,2002, Smartphone and WM2003 Compatible. Only $11.95 if you decide to buy it. Plus best thing of all it encodes to .wmv and even better divx format. PDF manuals and a support forum is also available from that website.

Saw this post, tried, but have problem

Hey everyone, new to the board, so if I make any mistakes, post in the wrong place, or have any bad manner...please excuse me as I learn!

I found the post on this web site which was step by step instructions for converting a DVD to WMA formatted for the PDA. The article is found here: http://www.aximsite.com/tutorials/index.php?qid=45

Anyway, I downloaded and ran the two products...the ripping software and Windows Media Encoder 9.

To make a long story short, I followed the directions and everything came out great except for on the PDA it has no volume. Playing the WMA file on my computer using Windows Media Player 9 works fine and has sound. Like I was saying it works great on the Dell X5 except that I can get no sound.

My PDA Configuration is Dell Axim X5, 2002 Operating System - Not 2003, Windows Media Player 8.5 build 12177.

Any help is most appreciated. Also I looked at the program that everyone is talking about on here that does it all for you. It says that it requires 2003. Does anyone know if it will run on 2002?

Thanks for the help!

Just how much space does a average DVD take on a memory card? this sounds interedting but also sounds like it is very time consuming and can get expensive.

This is what it says for the Pocket DVD studio website:
" Any movie less than 3 hours long can be compressed into a 128MB/256MB/512MB card. "
It pretty much depends on the quality. I know the program is alittle pricey but remember it allows you to carry a full length movie around in your pocket . Also from my understanding you can have several compressed movie on your CPU that way you can simply remove one movie from your memory card, save it on your computer and then put one of the movies saved on your computer on your now blank memory card. So if you have a program to do it, a memory card ( it think a 256 card would probably be the perfect size) and time then you can copy unlimited DVDs (as long as you own the dvd and it is not a rental) for your PPC. So it may be expensive but if you use it i think it would be worth it.
Hope this helps:D

I am able to get two movies on one 256 sd card. It is not that expensive at all to me, I record my soaps on dvd, ( Yes a I watch soaps blame it on my sisters) transfer them to my x30 and watch them on the train into work. I have the movie Cold Mountain and Butterfly Effect on one 256 card now which I think is great!. Its really nice the capabilties these things have, all you have to have is a desire to learn it and do it.

DVD to PPC 2002 - X5

I had the exact problem as I have just started to get interest in having some DVDs on my Axim. I have an Axim X5 Advanced PPC 2002, Windows Media Player 8.5 as well. I purchased #1 DVD Ripper and followed the same link on the Aximsite home page. Did you ever get this problem resolved? (I don't see any replies) I know that Windows encoder 9 is not compatible with PPC 2002 so I have removed that version and replaced it with version 7.1. (compatible) I tried to encode with 7.1 and got an error when choosing the file that was ripped. "the file is not an acceptable media file. It may have an unsupported or invalid formator may be corrupted. Cannot find validsource plugin to support specified source (0XC00d1b71)"

Any thoughts.

What i use is PocketDivx Encoder. It works with to betaplayer media player for pocet pc which also on the same sites it alows you customize the compression, sound quality, video quality, even resolution. i used many time with no bad encodes. on fast pc it took 20 min on slow one it took about 40. as far transfer it took 20 thru wifi over 1hr thru activesynce cradle. both piece of software are free!! And heres the link to download it. one more thing work best with betaplayer but will also work pocketmvp
http://divx.ppccool.com/ both enocder and betaplayer on this site.
