Soft Reset - Useful for when an App you are using decides to just 'lock-up' and stops responding, or the screen appears to freeze.

Hard Reset - Wipe all "user" data from the devices memory, restoring the device/OS back to Factory default.

Soft Reset on your Axim (whichever model) is like performing a "CTRL - ALT - DELETE" on your keyboard of your PC / or pressing the RESET button on the front of the PC.

The thing will reboot, re-initialise, closing all running processes and programs, and come back up to the OS.
All your data remains intact, and nothing gets lost (unless you were working on something at the time of the Reset, and didnt save it to disk).

A Hard Reset basically wipes all the Data in the devices memory (everything you installed or transferred to the device or saved). Restoring the device back to the factory 'image' that is stored in the devices ROM - being the standard OS with factory apps installed.

Hope that makes sense.

While we're on the topic, a guy posted in the Dell forums asking if there is a way to permaneltly erase all data from Main Memory. It was suggested that he do a hard reset. He claims that this won't do it, and that one of their company's Axims was smashed up and lost all power, yet someone was still able to extract valuable data from Main Memory.

I'm not thinking this is possible, but he claims it is. He wants to know if there is a utility out there that will completely wipe any traces of data in main memory so that it cannot be recovered.

I know of no way to do this other than:

A hard reset
Flash the ROM

Anyone have any comments on this issue? He wants to know if there is a utility that will securely erase main memory.

if you do it too much you may wear out the reset and power button, but thats it
