Will soft resetting cause permanent damage to your Dell X30?

I am about to perform a soft reset in order to return the program memory back to it's original state.

However, I am wondering if doing this will cause any permanent issues with the Axim X30 Mid.

Also does my Axim X30 have to be one while doing a soft reset?

Finally, is there anything else I need to know about a soft reset?

I would have read this in the manual but I left it at work. Can someone answer this for me please.

Thanks.

If you're returning everything to its original state, then its a Hard Reset. Ive actually done so a half dozen times since I got my Axim with no detrimental effects. It justs returns your system to how it was right out of the box.

Yes. Hard reset restores your PDA to it's original state. Soft reset keeps everything you may have installed or setup in your Axim but clears any running residual programs from it's main memory. It won't do any permanent damage either way.

I think I want to do a soft reset because my X30 says that my allocated program memory is using 13GB when I don't have any programs running or installed. I deleted everything from the temporary files and cookies, but it's not at its original 7-8MB program memory.

Sorry if this sounds really obvious, but do I need to have the X30 on while I do a soft reset?

Thanks

You probably need to soft reset. Press the button using your stylus on the back of your axim. Also, you may just have too much junk stored on your main memory...

Does the axim have to be on the today's screen to do this or do you have to turn it off entirely?

No, you just push the stylus into the small hole on the back of the Axim while it's powered on. It doesn't really matter whether anything is running or not, so long as you don't have any data that needs to be saved (like a document that you are editing).

thanks a lot...I know I'm worrying more than I should, but all my calender and tasks notes on the today's screen are saved information right?

In other words, I don't think I needed to do any separte operation to have them saved no?

Yes, they are saved. The only time you would loose such info would be if you were entering a new appointment or contact, and you soft reset before you saved the changes. Everything will be just the way it was before the soft reset. I must soft reset @ least 5-10 times a day . . .

Right...whenever people say they saved something on their Axim I get the idea that they actually clicked file > save > give filename

When in actuality it's just saved when you exit out of it...right?

Well that depends on the file...notes are automatically saved, but Word documents (I think...) need to be File>Save 'd :)

Just to be clear, there is a significant difference between a hard and a soft reset.
soft reset = kinda reboot, everything will be there when powered on

hard reset = kinda format c: -> reinstall windows -> reinstall programs, which are included (so everything you saved, installed, whatever after you got your axim will be gone, FOREVER, no way back, despite for backup)

When do which reset:

soft reset:
Whenever your axim is acting strange, is locked or something different. A soft reset will help in most cases.

hard reset:
Well that depends, if everything is ok, why touch it.
I'm doing a reset twice a year, just to get everything clear. Get me the newest software and so on. It really depends on you.

And no, neither a soft nor a hard reset will damage your axim.
Maybe if you doing it like 20 times a second;).

Hope that made some things clear.
