Memory Setup for Axim 400

Does anyone know the full details on the different memory types and uses in the Axim 400?

Built in Memory is the left over ROM after the operating system is written in. It's available to use, thanks to Dell, and it survives a hard reset intact. However, it is only good for about 10,000 writes, so use it sparingly. I put my backups there, and not much else.

Storage memory is the portion of RAM that is used to store data and applications. It is functionally equivalent to the hard drive in your PC. It does NOT survive a hard reset, but is totally erased if that happens.

Program memory is the portion of RAM that is used to run applications. It is functionally equivalent to the RAM in your PC. It does NOT survive a hard reset, but is totally erased if that happens.

Storage cards, both CF and SD, are places to store additional data and applications. Functionally, these are equivalent to additional hard drive space, or zip drives, etc. The stuff stored here survives a hard reset because it is not actually IN the machine memory space.

Okay, I'm a little concerned now. I stored some files on my "Built-In Memory", but recently noticed that they weren't appearing. OTOH, memory usage is showing most of the storage space is already in use...and still yet I was able to place a files there without the amount of available memory decreasing. I hope I haven't hurt myself.

I'm gonna guess that the answer is to make a full backup and then hard reset and restore. As the backup takes a while, I'm starting it now, but I'll try to wait for confirmation before doing the hard reset and restore. Let me know!

Thanks!

Try a soft reset and then look at the area again. Sometimes that re-reads the directory.
One tip: I have heard that it is not a good idea to run the Built-In memory really low. The urban legend is that if you try to fill it with more than it can handle the directory gets messed up.

There might be more urban than legend there. I have tried a soft reset, and just finished a hard reset and restore, and there is still 16.5mb "in-use" on the otherwise empty built-in storage.

If this were windows/dos, I would find a utility for making changes to the FAT or try a low-level format with FDISK on the partition....but this isn't windows...so what utilities might help?

Try going into debug

and type

g=c800:5

Only joking....

If memory serves me, this would low level format early HD's, proir to IDE.
