Question Internet access question?

I connect my Axim through the USB port on my PC at work. The work PC is connected to the internet via proxy set up through firewall port 80 on the LAN.
What do I need to set on the Axim in order for me to access the internet when connected to my PC? Do I need any new hardware/sofware? The Axim user guide seems very poor in this area and I am no network expert.
I have Omega One - Jounal Bar installed on the Axim and if I get the Internet working I should get updates...I would appreciate any advice....

You shouldn't need any additional hardware/software. When your Ax is synced with your PC the Ax can use the PC as a Pass-through to access the internet.

All I did was make sure all 3 settings under the Connection Settings are set to Work Settings. Although I think the first one is the most important.

If I remember correctly I think there is also a setting/option in ActiveSync on the PC that tells ActiveSync to allow the PC to be used as a Pass-Through (This was already set to "Work" and didn't have to change it).

I have also tried these suggestions with no luck. When installing the CD for the first time the LAN proxy connection details were automatically updated in the Axim from my PC. Are there any other settings I must make?

Try using "Internet Settngs" in your connections (in the first box - 'When needed, automatically connect to The Internet using these settings:' ).

I have the same setup you do at work and it worked for me right off the bat.

Good luck,

Gary

I found that I had to enter the proxy server settings in my Axim to make the connection to the internet. We use a Socks 5 server that requires network credentials to authenticate before you can connect through it.

Try entering the proxy server name or IP and your credentials (if applicable) in the connection settings by tapping the "Modify" button under "Work Settings".

I later got wireless setup at work so I no longer need to connect through my desktop PC to sync or access the internet or the corp network anymore.

I have aligned the proxy server settings on the axim with the ones on on my PC. I have selected the relevant proxy check boxes. The only entry I cannot add is the WAP one because these are'nt on the internet options on the PC. It still doesn't navigate to any web page in internet explorer and produces the 'can't find page error message'. What else can I do?

Could it be a work setting or some policy setting in Windows 2000 on my PC?

Looks to me I have tried to discuss in another tread exactly the same problem. While appologizing for the repeat, I am posting now the text here as well. Any help wpold be appreciated.

The Internet connection: still a puzzle.
I have difficulties performing even the simplest task: synching with my PC that is connected to the Internet and browsing the Internet (IE) on the Ax. No modem or any other card involved. I followed the instructions given by DELL:
1) In the PC, open IE and use Tools-Create Mobile Favorite Item.
2) In Favorites-Mobile Favorites click on the new created item and fill-in the address information, etc.
3) Sync the PC with Ax, using the Synchronize command that exists in the IE Tools. .
The above simple steps allegedly should download the Internet item into the Internet Explorer/Mobile Favorites directory of the Ax, from where the Internet item should be open and browsed.
Unfortunately this does not work.

However, one can start browsing directly from the Ax after connecting (synchronizing) it with the PC, by following a simple procedure:

1. Tap Internet explorer
2. In View, make sure the “Address Bar” is activated.
3. Write the desired http://….. address in the Address space
4. Click “enter”

The browsing starts. Now you can tap “Files” (the Mobile Favorites directory will show) and using the Add command you can include your new item in the list. In the future, whenever the Ax is synced, you can tap on this item and this IE site will be accessed.

Now the questions are: 1) Why the DELL instructions do not work? and 2) Why the steps that I successfully used are not described anywhere?

RavensOak,

There could be some policy on your network that prevents non-domain member PC's from authenticating with the proxy server. Your desktop PC would be a domain member whereas your Axim is not. Another possibility is that when you entered your logon ID on the Axim, you may need to also specify the domain name whereas on your dektop PC that is not required. Try entering your login name in the proxy server settings on the Axim as:

Domain\LogonID

rather than just the logon ID alone and see what happens.

Dumb question - have you asked any of the IT folks at your company about any possible restrictions they have in place?

I have managed to sync the PC with the axim and it copied the mobile favourites to the axim. When opening the favourite on the Axim is still comes back with 'The page you are looking for cannot be found' and displays the file://\windows\defaulk.htm page.

The same happens if I attempt to type in a url on the address bar.

If I try to add a favourite on the axim, I can give it a name but the address field is uneditable. Could this be a clue? Why can't I edit it?

I don't think there are any restrictions in performing a pass through to the internet in my company, but I will attempt to contact the network group to check this. I have to be careful in my approach because if there isn't a restriction in place now they may see a need for applying one! This is the main reason why I wanted to explore other options first.
