Never owned a PDA before, so I'm new to this with a few questions.

1. I have an older Dell desktop, celeron running Win98 2nd Ed. Will the Axim work with this desktop? Yes, I have USB ports.

2. I'm a teacher, and while researching Palm v. PPC, I noticed there were several education-related programs for Palm. Are there any available for PPC? if so, where?

3. Am I looking at the right thing? Is the Axim too much? Want something for calendar, contacts, several spreadsheets, Access DB, and word files.

Any other advice concerning the Axim or PPC will be greatly appreciated.

Yes - as long as you have usb support it should work fine

The price of Palms vs. the Dell Axim is not a big difference and with the Axim you get Microsoft compatable programs.

THis is my advise... I will never own a palm again !

For most of what you want the Axim will be a better choice. For Access DB's you have to have some sort of third-party support, Microsoft didn't put PocketAccess on the Pocket PC because it doesn't have a keyboard and they though nobody would use it. Doh!

I use HanDBase for my data. It has filters and sorting, and some forms. Most of my db's are for lists only, so I don't need any complex app support. I've also used VisualCD, abcDB and SprintDB. Search for them at Google and read for yourself. Some do have ODBC connects to Access on the pc.

For ed. programs look at handango.com and ddhsoftware.com. DDH is the company that wrote HanDBase. There are literally thousands of db's at DDH.

Just don't expect too much. PPC comes with CE Word and CE Excel. There is no "CE Access". These support simple documents. For example, CE Word does not support tables or heicherical documents very well. Also, you can loose some formatting if you move documents back and forth. Of course, add-on programs are available with more features, but add-on programs are also available for Palm.

The PPC is a lot of bang for the buck, and Dell is a great device. It's just not a laptop.
