Recieved my Axim last night, and I love it, haven't had any problems so far :) I have a question though: what do the different memory readings mean? program memory, storage memory and built in storage?
Good question, I have always
wondered my self exactly how
Dell proportioned the Memory of its
pda... i dont see 64MB/48MB ....
anywhere..Well I see the 64,
but I dont see the 48...

Main Memory (64MB on the X5 Advanced) is appportioned into:
- Program memory, for running processes (just like the RAM in your desktop PC); and
- Storage, for programs and data (think of it as a RAMdisk).
PocketPC automatically adjusts the relative allocations according to how much you've installed to Main and what processes you have running at any given time.
Built-in Storage (about 21MB on the X5 Advanced) is that portion of ROM not taken up by the OS (which requires about 27MB). Dell has made this slack space available to work like a storage card. On my Axim, I use this mostly to store backups.
One additional important difference between the different types of memory/storage is that everything in Storage and Program Memory (RAM) is lost when you perform a hard reset, or remove both batteries. Information in Built-In Storage (ROM) is not lost.
I hope you don't mind a few questions. I just popped my CF card into my Axim. Both are brand new, but I've put some programs on the built in storage before I installed the CF card.
Is there a way to move stored files to a card from built in? It's telling me I don't have enough memory to run certain programs (won't run WM)
I'm afraid this is only the first in a series of dumb questions. Where is the manual that explains all this? I didn't get one.:rolling:
Built-in storage doesn't affect your memory for running programs. You may have some programs installed in RAM or you may have several other programs running (minimized) that are still taking up RAM. You can use switcher bar, ICbar or whatever to make sure all other programs are closed, then try running WM.
Also make sure your memory settings aren't set so that you have reserved too much RAM for other uses. Under Settings there is an icon for memory. You can play around there to discover hwo much memory you have and what your memory is being used for.
I have the Axim basic and have never had a problem with low memory, even when running up to about 10 average apps at the same time.
Thanks! I moved some files to my CF card, and everything seems to be working fine now. However,
1) can you control where a new program or files are downloaded to (ie to the CF card?) during AutoSync?
2) am I right in surmising that WMP does not play MIDIS on the PPC? It certainly plays them fine on my PC, but the PPC WMP does not recognize the file format MIDIs.
3) also why will the Axim take some photos as background on the front screen, and not others? It rejects some and takes others. All are jpeg. (I've been experimenting)
1) When you install a program, just answer no to store it on the default (Program Files). You then get the option to install it to Built-in-storage, CF card or Main memory.

You need a theme generator program to convert the .JPG files to .TSK files, then they will work better. For some reason JPG files aren't exactly what the machine needs for a background. You can get a free theme generator from Microsoft. Search on this site for ideas for other theme generators.
