Stupid CF/SD card questions

So I'm finally the proud owner of some memory cards. (non-Sandisk; I've heard enough horror stories to stay away from those.) When my CF card arrived, I was able to just drop it in the Axim and start copying files over. Is there any advantage/reason to format it, or am I just good to go? Also, is it recommended to remove memory cards before a soft reset? I've seen mention of memory corruption otherwise, but again, that might just be a Sandisk thing.

Now I'm just hoping the family accountant will approve a Sandisk 6-in-1 Reader soon... ;)

CF cards are preformatted so there is no need to format them again. I haven't had any problems with keeping the CF card in when soft resetting.

slothdog, all you have to do is make sure the Ax is relatively quiet when you remove the cards. What you don't want to do is pull the card out in the middle of a write operation. The SanDisk cards seemed especially sensitive to that, but all of them could have problems if you interrupt a write operation, particularly a write to the directory.

So, don't do a write then yank the card out. Give it time to finish and then remove the card.

So is resetting with the card inserted ok, then? I actually have the same questions about SecureDigital cards, since I got one of those today as well. :)

I reset all the time with the cards in the slot. It slows down the reset a bit because the directory is completely read in and organized, but it's just easier to let the few seconds go by than to pull the card out every time I soft reset. (and I have both CF and SD cards and both stay in.)
