After synching down some Word.doc and Excel.xls files, I can get to them in
the Axim's main memory, and immediately open them using PocketPC Word or Excel;
however, if I move these files, using File Explorer, to my SD 128 MB card,
when I use Word or Excel to open the files they are not seen in the Word or Excel file manager.

If I use the PocketPC File Explorer to find these files on the SD card and then just click on them,
they open in the correct program.
Is there a way to let the Word & Excel programs know I have moved these files to the SD card?

Also, I seem to be doing something wrong with moving the files to the SD card, for the
next time I synch, the files get downloaded again from my desk PC to my Axim's main memory.

Is there a reference source for file management with an SD card?
Is there a "Axim for Dummies" textbook?

Thanks,

charly

I think the only stuff that gets syncd is the main MyDoc folder, so in my case I let doc and xls live there. You can make back-ups to card, but if you just move the file, apparently you're breaking the link to the PPC app.
I kind of miss the old "Save As" button, and I think that's what it would take.

If you moved the files into \SD Card\My Documents, then they should be visible to Word and Excel. If not, do so.

If that doesn't help, then check to see if there's an ignoremydocuments folder on the SD card; if so, move any contents elsewhere, and then delete it.

The Microsoft suite of tools looks for data in /My Documents folders on all memory locations. So you should put Word/Excel files on CF and SD cards in /My Documents or a subfolder. I'm pretty sure it will search down the subfolders. If not, you can use File Explorer to find the file and then tap on it and the appropriate app will open.

If you put the first such document in the root directory and there is no /My Documents folder, the o/s adds the ignoremydocuments folder so that when it scans the directory for /My Documents it knows there isn't one there. From that point on, it will search the entire card every time you open Word or Excel, creating a HUGE slowdown in starting those applications.

So, that's why Mizar suggested what he did. It will pay off in the long run!

I don't think \SD Card\My Documents get synched.

Also, it appears that the default PocketPC file selector will only search one level deep in My Documents subfolders. Thus, it'll find \SD Card\My Documents\Personal\Resume.doc but not \SD Card\My Documents\Personal\Current\Resume.doc. But as Jake notes, you can always select the file in File Explorer, and the relevant app will open it.
