First off...retain your Axim in its docking cradle or attached to the sync cord...
While the e-mail is displayed, you notice the attachment sitting at the base of your display screen (on the e-mail).
[Before it's available, you should see a lil' twisted arrow to the left of the attachment. That's indicating the attachment has yet to download]. See it?
Okay...
Now, use your stylus to select the "Edit" button at the very bottom of the display. With the "drop
up" menu displayed, select "Mark for Download." Momentarily, your Axim will sync up again with Outlook and will make the attachment accessible.
[At this time, you should see the lil' twisted arrow has disappeared].
Now, tap the attachment with your stylus and you'll have the attachment opened by pocket Word/Excel. Voila!
If you would like to
save that attachment...return to the e-mail with the attachment at the base of the display screen. Press and hold your stylus on the attachment for a second and you'll have the lil' circles encompass it as well as a display of "Save As." Click "Save As" and you'll be presented with a means to save it (if you wish). Be cautious however!!! The default (at least on my Axim) is to save it to the system's Main Memory...and if I'm not mistaken, that's the "good place" to save stuff. It does not seem to be recommended to save docs, etc., to the "Built-In Storage"...that's the ROM area for your Axim and only has 10,000 re-writes (so always limit its deliberate use). "Best place" IMO would be to save any attachments to a memory card.
Hope all this helps. I'm a newbie of ~ 1 week myself, but I've been using the hell outta this jimmie and business e-mail attachments have been my forte for this week.

PS. Oh yeah...once the attachment has been successfully downloaded, you no longer need to keep the Axim in its cradle/cord. You can take it to a meeting, etc., and review the attachment, etc. There's probably a setting that would make all attachments automatically download...but I'm deliberately steering clear of that (since in my particular support desk job, I often receive e-mails with "screen prints" attached...can be huge, so I'm selective with what I want downloaded ;)).
