Connecting to Internet???

OK being a major newbie to the whole pDA thing please go easy on me.:D

I have my Axim (no modem card) sitting in my usb/charging cradle. It is connected to mu desktop via active sync. My desktop has internet access via Cable modem.

Can the Axim connect to the internet through the desktop/cable modem without a seperate modem card.

If not can an axim connect to a cable modem or just to a "wired" telepone connection?

The same issue has been raised in other treads of this same forum. Here is my "contribution" to this question (sorry for posting it repeatedly):

The Internet connection: still a puzzle.
I have difficulties performing even the simplest task: synching with my PC that is connected to the Internet and browsing the Internet (IE) on the Ax. No modem or any other card involved. I followed the instructions given by DELL:
1) In the PC, open IE and use Tools-Create Mobile Favorite Item.
2) In Favorites-Mobile Favorites click on the new created item and fill-in the address information, etc.
3) Sync the PC with Ax, using the Synchronize command that exists in the IE Tools. .
The above simple steps allegedly should download the Internet item into the Internet Explorer/Mobile Favorites directory of the Ax, from where the Internet item should be open and browsed.
Unfortunately this does not work.

However, one can start browsing directly from the Ax after connecting (synchronizing) it with the PC, by following a simple procedure:

1. Tap Internet explorer
2. In View, make sure the “Address Bar” is activated.
3. Write the desired http://….. address in the Address space
4. Click “enter”

The browsing starts. Now you can tap “Files” (the Mobile Favorites directory will show) and using the Add command you can include your new item in the list. In the future, whenever the Ax is synced, you can tap on this item and this IE site will be accessed.

Now the questions are: 1) Why the DELL instructions do not work? and 2) Why the steps that I successfully used are not described anywhere?

Okay, looks like we all got into muddle through this internet connection issue:

here is how I got mine to work:

On the pocket PC,

Settings --> Connections --> connections
I left the top drop down in it's default setting - "Work Settings"
In "Modify", on this top setting, I chose to check the box "This network connects to the Internet"

The bottom setting reads "Internet"
The middle dialog- I left alone to be the default

Then following that convoluted Microsoft logic, I created a "mobile favourite" in IE . Then, right clicking on the favourite, I "synchronized" it-- all the while the Pocket PC was "synced" to the desktop via a USB cable.

At the end of all this, I was able to browse through the internet in a limited sort of way- the connection speed sucked, and I wish I could "landscape" the browser window.
If you want to access the links on the page, you have to specify in IE on the desktop, how many levels of links you want on the "Mobile Favorites" --> right click --> properties dialog--> download --> "download page "n" links deep"

Hope this helps,

Cheers!!!
Jaydee.
