I downloaded and installed Microsoft Theme Generator. Everytime I start the desktop app. it says "a device attached to the system is not functioning" "error starting program. the skinapp.exe file is linked to a missing export shell32.dll.......)
Downloaded and installed twice. Same prob.
Tried having the Axim attached to cradle and not attached.

Anyone else having this problem?

If it was me, I'd run a registry cleaner first.
Look in Main, properties, device manager. Any flags?
USB stuff can be wierd.
Does the Axim still sync up ok?

After a bit of poking around, I think I've found the problem but haven't yet come up with a solution.

Skinapp.exe (the actual Theme Generator executable) wants to call the function SHGetFolderPathA in SHELL32.DLL. The problem is that older versions of SHELL32.DLL don't contain this function -- it's located in SHFOLDER.DLL instead. From my (somewhat limited) understanding of how things work with Windows DLLs, because SkinApp expects to find the function in SHELL32, it craps out.

The solution might be to find a newer version of SHELL32.DLL which contains the required function. So far tonight, I can't find it anywhere.

I have had the same problem with Theme Generator. Running Windows 98SE.... Anxiously awaiting a solution!

I am using win XP Pro and the theme generator will not resize itself nor go to max, thus I can't get to the buttons that allow you to save your newly generated theme! Any one else have this problem? Was this POS written by Microsoft? Seems like a lot of bugs for single task software.

Microsoft states on its website that the Theme Generator is 'unsupported;' i.e. if it doesn't work, don't complain. Nice of them...

My experience with this Theme Generator was that after I installed it I tried to open it. It stated then I needed to have either WIN NT, WIN 2K, or WIN XP in order to run it. I thought it odd since I had tried to run it before but had the same problem as described above... I couldn't resize or use many of the buttons... pretty useless piece of software on first look. Something obviously works out there or others have had much better luck using it because there are so many great Today Themes out there!

Looking forward to stumbling upon a solution myself.

If you want do do a little work, try Icbar to skin the top Title bar. It has more impact (imo) than a washed-out wallpaper anyway.

Its too bad, because this seems like a good program. I would like the ability to completely customize the entire today screen. I will have to try out ICBAR and see how it is.

If anyone finds a solution to running MSTG on Win98, please post a solution.

Solved the problem of it not working in XP. I was unable to "size" the program, hence could not get to the buttons at the bottom of Theme Generator (the back and next buttons). As it turns out I have my monitor resolution set to 1600x1200 and to make the things visible to my old eyes, in the display/settings/advanced tab you can set the "DPI" to 150% of normal. The Theme Generator program obviously cannot handle this. By setting the DPI back to normal I can at least get to the buttons at the bottom (still does not resize).
