32/32 Axim memory question

I have a 300MHz 32/32 Axim, which I just got my hands on today.

When looking through the memory page under Settings, I noticed that I seem to be missing memory.

Under Memory, I see this:

Which fits. 32MB there. But under Storage Card (No cards installed, so I understand this to be the internal storage), I only see "5.62MB Total!"

It says 2.05 MB used, 3.57 MB Free. That hardly adds up to 32MB!

What's the deal?

The deal is that the majority of that 32 MB of ROM holds the operating system. Most of the files stored there show up in the \Windows folder. What's left (approx. 5MB) is set up as a storage card. On the X5 Advanced (48MB ROM), there's about 21MB available.

Ok, that's good to know, I thought I had a hardware problem. =P

I thought that any data stored would show up as "used" somewhere, not be blocked out altogether.

So on the first memory page, are there any reccomendations on the slider's position? More for storage, or more for program? I assume Program is for anything that happens to be running, so it should be bigger, to accomodate more applications (especially if I have a secondary storage card to use instead of the onboard RAM)?

I'm sure glad I read this thread, I didn't know what that storage card was. Are there any limitations to it's use?

You can store as much data on them as their size permits. Other then that, no.

The best option is to leave it in automatic.
The system will take what it needs to run in as conditions change, so the big thing is that you don't fill up the Storage Memory too full, limiting what is left for Program Memory.
16 - 20mb should be available for Program memory to prevent slowdowns and crashing.
Copy/Paste operations can take twice the file size in free space to accomplish.

Actually there is a limit to the number of writes on ROM, about 10,000. RAM has millions of writes, but ROM isn't really intended for day-to-day operations. 10,000 sounds like a lot until you do the math:

Assume 2 year life of the Ax
365 days per year (your mileage may vary ;) )

10,000/(2*365) = 14 writes/day

14 writes a day is not really a lot, if you put volatile files there (logs, programs with configuration files, etc.)

So, I only put static kinds of stuff there--backups, restore software, registrations for software for when I have to restore, etc.

I just re-read his post trying to figure out what you were talking about, I thought he was referring to storage cards (SD/CF). I didn't realize he meant the built-in storage, otherwise I would have given the same answer. =)

A hard reset will erase everything in Main (i.e. not stored in "Built-in Storage," which is ROM, or on a storage card).
