Question no serial port for axim

this is my first post so I'll be short since I don't even have my axim yet.

I've been told that because the axim does not have a serial port like some of the high end ipaq's, I won't be able to use my "anywhere wx". It shows nexrad weather on your pda. It's mostly used by pilots to see upcoming weather on their flight path. Are there any ways around this?

Dell makes a serial sync cable, and there are also CF to serial interface cards available. Then you'd need an application to provide access.

The Anywhere Map manual is the only manual that I could find on their site that showed how the hardware was being connected.

http://www.controlvision.com/pages/awm_manual.htm

Since thats the only source on their website, heres a few questions that hopefully will help us answer your question.

Are you connecting the Ipaq and GPS with the "Integration Module" or with a Ipaq standard serial synch cable and null modem adapter to a GPS serial cable, or a modified Ipaq cable that connects directly to a gps?

As per the manual for Anywhere Map, it stated in the Hardware requirements that it required a "RS-232 Port(usually the docking cradle port)", if so then there is a possibility that Anywhere Map at least might work with the AXIM.

I was looking over their hardware accessories and found this..

AW161 & AW161-D
Universal DC Adapter

Product Summary:

This allows the iPAQ or Dell Axim to receive power from the aircraft power port, while using the Sentinel GPS to run the Anywhere Map. An adapter is required for use with the 38xx series iPAQ.

Product Availability:
Currently In Stock

AW161-D - For Dell Axim
<$32.95>

I just thought that it was interesting. It's the only thing I found relating to a Axim. I had not found a cigarette lighter adapter for the Axim that connects to the power input instead of the sync port. I may have to buy one of these.

Pics of the setup would be nice. They aren't providing enough info for my taste.

Ding, ding, ding, ding... a correct answer! I found the number by faking an order, then customizing it with the cable, looking at the order in my cart and then cancelling the cart. Then I created a new order and just put the number of the cable in the cart and ordered it. Ta-da!

I just looked up the item I purchased (from an Ebay auction) from Moonlight, and the picture does show the one you mention which connects to the sync port. However, the one I received from them most definately connects to the power input -- I just used it today!

Rock on. A tad complicated, but I finally figured it out.

You left out the step about doing a search by part number. I couldn't find anywhere to just put the number in the cart.

Thanks.
