Back Up Times

My system just took 1 1/2 hours to back up what is basically < 64 megs of RAM. Is that normal? It seems excessively long... especially since I can back up my 120 gig hard drive in the same period of time.

Unfortunately, yes, it is normal. I've never figured out what the Microsoft programmers could possibly have done to make this operation so slow.

FWIW, the Dell backup (to SD or compact flash) is much faster, so you might want to look into picking up a couple of cheap CF cards to use for rotating backups rather than using the ActiveSync backup.

Yep, it takes quite awhile for my backups too. Now that you have done a full back-up, you can change to incremental back-ups. This will only backup what has changed since your last full back up, and that should cut down on the time a little bit.

Cool Back-ups

A necessary evil - you'll find that the incremental back-ups are fastest. If you have a choice to back up to one of your memory cards (you DO have a memory card I hope :) ) or to the internal flash ROM - pick the memory card instead.

As I am anal retentive, I DO have an archival back up of my contact database ONLY to the Flash ROM as a last point of no return in case I need a hard resety, and am away from one of the pair of desk units I ALSO back up and snych to...

Theory is the more doo doo you get into as a result of losing the data - the more copies you should have floating around. Its cheap insurance!
