i`m thinkin bout the same question at the moment.... but reading this thread gets me on the 300 mhz side...
Think about it: The Cradle is really just a toy. The 100 Mhz plus are not noticeable, as many users say, and you get more memory at all if you save the money and buy some cf/sd cards. here in germany this difference is 100 € = 100 $. You can easily get 256 megs of extra space for 80 €!!! So for the "kids" among us there`ll still be 20 € left to get the cradle...
I somewhere read about invetigating in the future with the 400 mhz modell.... a new os might only fit into the bigger rom...
But guys, come on, when will there be an upgrade? 2 Years? Will it bring really important changes? Anyway, new os will only come along with new devices. So i think it´s better to save the money now and buy a whole new unit (maybe a cheap dell again:)) when new os and features apear.
Nevertheless i´d be happy about some more experiences concerning the 2 units...
I went with the 400. My reason was that I had already bumped into the 32 Meg ceiling on an older PDA I had, and I wanted to have more working RAM. In particular, most GPS Mapping and navigation software is limited to the maps it can fit in memory. By having 64 instead of 32, I get more map coverage.
If you are looking for a handhels to use mainly for PIM, then get a 300, if this is a new toy for you and you want to play games, listen to music, and watch video get the 400
Jego, here's a little help, you can press edit to fix handheld.
Anyway, I got the Advance (400MHZ). My reason? why not shell out another $100? It would be almost the same price as every other PDA with less stuff in it, like possibly memory and/or speed depending on the model to be compared with. Besides, I wasn't planning to buy a storage card for awhile so why not get more RAM and ROM memory and I'll take that difference in speed because hopefully MS will develope an OS that will take advantage of the XScale processors.

Go with the 300mhz. I'd rather spend the extra 100 bucks
on a 256MB memory card.
As far as the speed goes, you can download TURBOTRAY and run the 300 mhz at 400mhz. Been using this program for over a month, and it's great! NO problems whatsoever!
I Went for the 4 mostly for the same reason of more Flash ram, built in WiFi Speed etc. But mostly for the price per features that Dell is currently running the x3i for. After figuring the plus and minuses of Dell's PDA and others it made the most sense to go for the X3i.
I went for the 4 because of the extra built in ram. That 32 is too low, because some programs only let you install in the primary memory, means it uses up a lot of room. Plus I like my WiFi built in.
