Out of memory! :(
Okay, it seems I'm close to being out of memory and I don't know why. I don't have that many programs installed on my axim either. (or at least it doesn't seem so to this newbie) Does it look like I have a lot installed to you??

My memory settings show:

Storage (Free): 3.31 MB
Program (Free): 4.44 MB

Storage Card (Free): 21.24 MB

Apps installed (besides the usual pocket word, etc.):

Everquest
ConverterCE
MA701 (My wifi card s/w)
Microsoft Reader
Picture Perfect
Pocket Streets (Deleted maps though)
Pocket Divx

Is there something I'm missing? I tried installing another program to an empty CF card, but it said it couldn't install due to not enough memory. Hmm...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you done a soft reset lately?

Remember, the little X in the corner doesn't close programs automatically in Pocket PC 2002.

You need to use another software to do that (Like the task switcher, magic button, wisbar, pocketfacelift, etc)

Yes, I've tried doing a soft reset. Also, I usually make sure I close my running apps (By using the dell switcher), not by hitting the X.

On, speaking of which, when I gave those memory settings earlier, I had quit out of everything first.

Are all your programs giving you the "out of memory" error? If so, you might want to free up some of your memory in your programs area. Remember that some of the programs you have may require cache to you may want to adjust those programs as well.

The "Storage Card" looks a lot like the Size of Built-In memory. Is that what it is? If so, where's your CF card report on free space? Do you have a lot of ebooks for the Reader? Do you surf a lot (creates temp files for the Internet if you do). Is your Ax the 300 or 400? It looks like a 400, if that Storage Card is the Built-In. ALso, with PocketDIVX, did you load any videos? They take up a huge space. Divx also sets aside cache when it is running, so that could be part of it, too.

Lets see if I can answer your questions so you may help me better.

I have an Axim 400.

The memory settings now show:

MAIN

Storage Program
Allocated: 53.65 MB Allocated: 9.89 MB
In Use: 50.34 MB In Use: 3.57
Free: 3.31 Free: 6.32

STORAGE CARD (Built In)

In Use: 0.00 MB Free: 21.24 MB

STORAGE CARD (CF Card)

In Use: 15.23 MB Free: 0.00 MB

EDITED: (It's a 16 MB CF card)

Re: Pocket DIVX - I did have videos loaded, but I've already deleted them. Don't see a place to clear the cache.

I do have some reader documents (PDF) installed on the CF card, but none on the device itself.

Yes, I do surf a lot (now that I have a wi-fi card) I've just deleted the temp files. I thought that using the "delete temporary files" button in the explorer options would have done this for me??

Go out and get yourself a minimum of 128MB SD or CF card.
If you shop around, you can get one anywhere from 40-50 dollars.
Then your memory problems will be over.

Woof, 50+ Mbytes of storage used! That's your problem right there. Use Activesync>Explore from the PC to look at what's chewing up memory and start cleaning house. I'd look at My Documents, followed by Temp, then Program files. 16 Meg is not a big enough storage card if you have to carry all that stuff with you. Move as much as you can to a big SD or CF card. I try to keep at least 30 Meg of Main memory free. Right now I have 28.79 free Program memory and 12.47M free storage available and I'm getting ready to purge some of the storage off to get back to about 20 meg free. You can also use the Built-In for storing non-volatile stuff. Don't put stuff in Built-in that changes a lot because it only has about 10,000 writes available, compared to millions in RAM and CF/SD cards. But you can put unchanging stuff there, like backup files that only seldom change.

Try this, http://tillanosoft.com/ce/sfinder.html

Spacefinder will show directory sizes which should allow you to find your space hogs.

Could you be more specific about the type of files should/should not go onto the the back up storage.

Even though I have I have loaded just about all of my aps on to my 1 GB CF or 256 MB SD card, I am still down to 12.97 MB free on Storage and 13.86 free on Programs on my AXIM 400

The built in storage is rom (sort of) so it has a 10,000 time write limit (maybe). Therefore, do not use it for things that will be accessed more than a few times a day. You guys need to take a hard look at what you have on ram. 64 meg is more than enough if your careful. I would reccomend loading spacefinder so you know what is using the memory.

Hey Samim, thanks for the tip on SpaceFinderPlus! Seems the majority of the problem was due to file attachements (Even though I was limiting the file size to 200k). My Windows:Messaging folder is 35MB!

Now, how to get rid of them? Well, I went to the inbox settings in the ActiveSync program and turned off file attachements. Then, I did another sync. I thought that would have removed the file attachements on the PPC device, but alas, no. How do I easily get rid of all the attachements but keep the emails? (Don't want to get rid of them on my desktop).

Thanks again!

I haven't used mail much but I did see an option to store attachmetns on the CF/SD card. You might try that for future emails. I can't say how to fix the problem of what you have now, but that should help in the future.

I created a mail folder on the PC called Saved Items, where I can keep mail, but also keep the Inbox empty.

But...

1) How do I remove the attachements already on my pda without screwing up the mail on my desktop? If I use SpaceFinder to delete the attachements in the attachments folder, will it delete the attachments in outlook on the desktop?

2) How do I tell it to go to that particular folder?
