I would like to know if the Axim can charge in the cradle using the USB port, or does it require that the AC adapter? The iPAQ 5455 can charge of of the sync cradle via the USB port.

I am also looking for advice on whether to purchase a CF of SD memory card. I heard that the CF card will draw more power than the SD card.

Does the Axim have an auto backlight like the iPAQ's?

What is the range of the Axim IR. The 5455 will reach 15' with no problem.

Are there any good belt clip cases for the Axim?

What is the usual lead time from when an order is placed until it actually arrives?

Thanks

The Axim needs the AC adapter to charge; it doesn't draw power from the USB port.

"Auto backlight?" If you referring to being able to have it turn off after a specific period of inactivity, yes.

Looks like people are waiting anywhere from one day to two weeks for arrival, depending upon the model they order and the type of shipping they specify.

Check out this thread on a sync/charge cable for the Axim. It is due out next month and will do both through the USB port. One thing you need to remember is that the Axim is very new and a lot of third party vendors are racing to get products out for it, but it will take time. The iPaq's have been around for years, therefore there will be more availabilty of all the add-ons. The Axim is by far the better deal and there will be many accessories for it...it'll just take a little while for them to hit the market.

I've never heard this before, they both use 3.3V.

For auto backlight, I think the IPAQ has an ambient light sensor that automatically turns the backlight off when the PDA is viewed in sunlight. Or maybe it even modulates the backlight brighness? The Axim has no such feature.

I was interested in whether having the backlight always on would change the visibility of the screen in different lighting conditins. I did some informal tests, and found that the screen visibility is never hurt by leaving the backlight on, whether in shade, cloudy, or direct sunlight. So the only issue is battery useage.

As for SD -vs- CF memory cards, there are some other posts. The big issue to me is that the Axim does not support any I/O SD cards. Whether you want WiFi, GPS, modem ... all I/O cards have to use the CF slot. This makes it a no-brainer to go for SD memory.

The Axim IR is not as strong as the Compaq. If you're into remote control, there is a nifty little device that plugs into the headphone jack (with appropriate software). This is even stronger than the Compaq. Sorry, I can't remember the name. I suggest searching the other great Windows CE site -- pocketpcthoughts.com.
