I'm a two week owner of an Axim. I want to be able to use the wireless capability to access email and the web. I do not want to purchase the wrong phone. I have Cingular service, am comfortable with my service and plan. They currently offer two phones with GSM capability and the local salesman is not sure which would work with the Axim. The specs for both follow. Please answer which one should work with the Axim, I don't want to buy something that won't work. Also, please tell me what else I need to make this happen (Flash/SD cards)?

Sony Ericson T62u: GPRS (3+1) High-Speed Data Connection, 850/1900 MHz GSM, 850/1900 MHz TDMA and Analog, Not Infrared Capable.

Nokia 6340i: Wireless Internet Capable- (WAP 1.2.1), 850/1900 MHz GSM, 850/1900 MHz TDMA and Analog, Infrared Capable

Any help would be appreciated.

Tks, Ed

Unless someone starts making cables for AXIM you will only be able to use a IrDA phone. Socket is making some CF cards for some phones but not Cingular or GMS services yet. I own a Nokia 8290 with IrDA. I have been having all kinds of problems with this setup. I had purchaced a iPAQ just to see it it would work with my phone and at first had problems. I found a upgrade on the Compaq site and upgraded the iPAQ. Everything worked great. So I ordered Axim because it was $150 cheaper plus had CF built in which is $50 more on iPAQ plus adds thickness to it too.
I have searched support and looked everywhere but no help. Have found others with same problem. I plan to Call customer support soon when I have time to Wait on the phone. If nothing gets worked out soon probley will be sending Axim Back. I dont think Cingular is selling any IrDA phones now. They do sell one with bluetooth but I have read that Only a bluetooth CF card will work in Axim no SD cards. This is someting you can try. The Sony 68 phone has bluetooth.

FYI....

GSM will not get you a connection. You need a Data Connection not a Voice Connection. Most Cell Providers offer both. However there is NO way to transfer data over an analog network. You need all Digital.

I have an Axim X5 300Mhz and a Belkin Bluetooth CF card. It connects to my Nokia 6310i phone and I use ATTW GSM/GPRS cell Service I can walk down the street talking on the Phone and surfing the web at the same time. Data service is usually sold by MB not minutes. I pay $99.00 per month for unliited voice service and an additional $40.00 per month for 10MB of Data per month. I previously had vertually the same phone Nokia 6360 and ATTW TDMA service 2400 minutes Nationwide for $200.00 per month. The Phone costed me $200.00 roughly so it will take 4 months to pay for the phone and the rest is savings. What did I lose. The lousy analog service. If there is no Digital signal there is no signal for me. I have not noticed any lack in service so far (6weeks)

Contact Cingular, I am sure they can help you with the right connection. I think both GSM/GPRS and CDPD are Data capable networks. I only am familiar with GSM/GPRS.

BTW....there was no one to help me out either. Just be persistant. Most People at the Cell Co. Do not know PDA's. People at Dell do not know Cell service. The people at the CF card mfg. barely know either. YOU will have to add it all up yourself and make it work. People like me will try to help you make it work. You can return the favor to me later.

Happy Hunting!

Frank
