tried to download quake II and it totally locked up the axim. I'm totally new to this stuff. took all the batteries out as I tried to do a reset and it didn't work, am now restoring everything with the restore program. What's the real way to fix a future problem like this when the whole thing is locked up

I did follow the instructions in the tutorial before I took out the batteries, and nothing happened

A Soft-Reset should be able to clear that kind of lock up, as it kills any running processes...and it doesn't wipe RAM.

There is a small indentation on the left side, just under the record indent. Push this with your stylus and hold for a moment. This will reboot the Ax.
