Help!!

How do you install programs in BIS? On the X51v it only gives you the option of device, SD or CF? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Hmmmmm. The weather up here in "Cool Pool" sure has been a little BUMPY, with all the winds, and such.
Just thought I would let you all know that, hehehe.

Thx stoneraven9, this is a great faq. I am not new to tech but new to the Axim platform. You answered some questions and also made me realize I need to think about backing up my handheld.

Icon14 Again why isnt this a sitcky

there are two threads (this one being the second) that have appeared that my keyword searches through the forums never picked up on ???

they should both be made sticky's ASAP I will post the relevant section highlighting this. :approve:

It might also be useful having a troubleshooting section for hardware, software etc.

Traditional EEPROM chips of 10 years ago have Write-Erase durability of 10,000 cycles.

Flash chips have higher durability cycles of 100,000 cycles or up to 500,000 cycles depending on the manufacturer - BUT Flash chips have a problem where if you want to make any small change to it, what it does is actually :
1. read entire content of flash block
2. erase entire content of flash block
3. rewrite entire content of flash block with new changes
(a flash block can be anywhere from 0.5MB to ?MB)

This is different from EEPROM where changes are only made on byte level - where if changes required on one byte, only that byte is changed...

Does anyone know who manufactures our "ROM" and whether it's FLASH memory or EEPROM memory?

If our BIS is FLASH, then we must be careful that we don't store any programs which will write and erase a lot of "temporary" files - or else we will use up our 100,000 cycles pretty quickly...

I cant remember seeing a response to the thread above ??

Can we get some guidance on the quality and speed of SD and CF cards. There is a multitude of choice and wide variances in price. I see Viking 2g SD card for like ?? and then see a PNY 2g SD for £118 ?? i assume its the old brand issue but is there a performance issue as well ??

Thanks in advance !! :approve:

I believe, but not absolutely sure, that they are just flash drives, and have no idea as to the number of writes available to them. The manufacturer probably has this info, I assume.
I am currently using a 1 gig lexar SD, a 2 gig kingston SD, and a 1 gig lexar CF. Every card is working perfectly, with nary a problem, except for my reader acting up a bit when I transfer from the main 'puter. No big deal, and it all works out in the end. The only odd thing is my Kingston 2 gig shows up as only having 1 gig when I have it in the Axim 50v, but I have put almost 2 gig worth of music files on it, and it shows only 20 meg left when it is in the Axim, and every song plays properly. Not sure why it doesn't show the whole card when it was empty, but it is now a moot point with it being full, and working perfectly.
Hope this helps a bit, but mostly it is just general info.
I was lucky and got the 2 gig card for $69 Canadian, a pretty good price (from Dell Days of Deals, heheheh)
I think that is about standard now, as the price continues to drop just about every day, eh?
Cheerio.
