I installed Sprite Backup on my BIS area, with it doing regular scheduled backups onto my SD card. MrKlatuu has a nice setup on how to set up Sprite Backup for automatic scheduling. I forget which post it was in, so do a search and find it. (good experience learning the search feature of the site).

(might be a difficult Search, otherwise)!

Welcome aboard the Aximsite. Hope you are having "fun" with your new toy.
Use the file explorer to find out what has been installed where.
My limited advice is to leave the memory slider more or less in the middle. Maybe move it a bit to the left, to allow a little more room for programs to run, but the system will manage it.
Some programs operate better in the Main Memory area, and should be installed there. These are yourToday screen programs such as Pocket Breeze, Pocket Plus, Today Plus, Contact Breeze, and your program launcher apps.
My suggestion is not to install too much on your Ax until you get your storage card, as a lot of programs are able to run off the cards quickly and easily. If you install them now, you will just want to move them later, or have to uninstall them and install then again. My personal preferrence is to use the SD card for running stuff like Betaplayer, Adobe, etc (things that give you a choice to install the main part of the program) and to leave the CF card slot for multimedia, such as pictures, music files, movies, etc (this will eat up room quickly, and CF cards are normally a bit cheaper when you want to purchase another)
Put your file management programs, such as Advanced Explorer, or Pocket Mechanic, or Resco Explorer, in your Built in Storage area. They run well from there.
You have to understand, as well, that even though you direct the programs to install in a particular spot, the programs are still going to put certain files in your main memory or your BIS (windows area) anyways. These are pesky to find and try to move, and if you are not sure what to do, leave them alone (at least until you learn a little more, hehehe)
Oh yeah, don't forget to backup everything before you add programs. Sometimes they lock up your Ax, or just do not want to run with a particular program you already have installed. Learn where your "reset" button is, quick.

In the end... Just have fun and do not get too caught up in the toy. Don't forget, as long as you have a recent backup, you can always do a hard reset to get everything back to normal, then restore the files.
Thanks StoneRaven for the indepth explination of what to do. Is Sprite freeware? You named off a bunch of applications. Any recommendation on what is a necessity and what isn't?
Thanks again...

Howdy,
Sprite is not freeware, but is handy enough to justify buying. It has two editions, basic and premium. If you buy the basic, you can upgrade to the premium for the same final amount as if you bought the premium from th start. Check the posts... a lot of people use it. (don't forget to check the "view my pda" areas of people's avatars.
As for memory and good prices... I live in Canada and we normally do not get very good prices for computer stuff up here.
As to what is neccessary, that is dependant on your uses of the PDA. Again check the View PDA area to get an idea of what people use, and what works for them. A lot of people add links to make it easier for beginners.

Awaiting delivery on my x50mid middle of next week! Received an ipaq 1715 as gift and quickly found it addictive and no where near big enough or sophisticated enough for my business needs! This memory information is very much appreciated as I am not very computer lingo literate!! I am sure that I will be back asking many questions when I actually get it in my hands!! Thank you for all the information....
You are more than welcome. That is why I wrote it... to help.

This thread has been a great help for me!!
I do have a couple of "newbie" questions
I have BIS, SD, and CF.. I have that straight. However,
1. I see a lot of things such as "windows, tasks, profiles, ConnMgr, Temp" that don't appear to be a part of any source of memory. I'm assuming this is used in Main memory (RAM)? Is there any of these that I could pust somewhere else for efficiency reasons?
2. I am seeing what was discussed about My Documents, and the "no my documents" or whatever it is, in the areas that don't have that folder. Am I supposed to just copy and paste the My Doc folder to BIS, SD, and CF for the best efficiency? Surely once something is saved to this folder you wouldn't put it in all three places.... I'm also sure that if that was the case, that the machine wouldn't save to all threee automatically...
Perhaps its my lack of understanding that has me asking what I think are "stupid" questions, and by that I mean questions that may not make sense... But I am catching on... Those of you who voluntarily take time out of your day to post info for us newbies is greatly appreciated!!! I've saved a lot of time with your info!! THANKS AGAIN!

I would leave these files as they are, and where they are. Go by the old saying, if you do not know what it is... don't touch it.

If you do not have a "my Documents" folder on every drive, the PDA will create a file that tells the OS to ignore this drive when it goes looking for documents. Make a folder on every drive called "My Documents" and delete the "ignore" file. That way any files you may place on that drive will be automatically found. If there is nothing in the folder it takes up about ziltch for space anyways.

why?????? "put the today plug-ins (such as SPB Pocket Plus, Wisbar 2, Pocket Breeze, Contact Breeze, Pocket Informant, and iLauncher) into Main Memory."
why?????? "put the today plug-ins (such as SPB Pocket Plus, Wisbar 2, Pocket Breeze, Contact Breeze, Pocket Informant, and iLauncher) into Main Memory."
Because Main Memory is quicker than BIS.
