Ok, a real newbie here but why should I buy the Dell instead of the Palm515? The only difference I see is that the palm has 320x320 pixels, vs the Axim 240x320. Can anyone explain in plain English? LOL Thanks Art

Well the biggest difference is the Palm uses the PalmOS which is a single tasking, albeit, fast OS. The Axim, otoh, uses PocketPC 2002, which is more like Windows on your PC. It multitasks, for example, with a Palm I cannot, listen to music while I browse a web site or play a game. On any PPC, I can, and much more. It all comes down to what YOU want it to do. There is really not much comparison between the two. The Palm has 16 meg of ram vs the 64 meg in the Axim. The Palm processor is also slower. The Axim includes both an SD card slot and a compact flash slot. No compact flash on the Palm.

The pixel size of the screen on the Palm also includes some non-display area where the user input area is at - so you really don't have as big a display on it.

But the biggest difference is the operating system. The Palm uses its own OS (version 4.1 on the 515). The Axim uses Microsoft's PocketPC 2002, which includes the most popular word processor and spreadsheet apps - Word and Excel.

Both units retail for the same amount - $349 plus a $50 rebate.

The versatility, speed, memory, expansion capabilty, popularity of the OS, and accessories and software available make the Axim a clear choice in my opinion.

Correction Palm 515 does not have 320 -320 resolution. its resolution is 160-160.Only the sony high end clies had 320-320 resolution, like 615.665, nr70 ,etc before they moved to palm os 5.0 about 3 months ago.The palm os 5.0units like Tungston, sonny NX units have 320-320 resolution, they cost $500 and 600 respectively.

Ok, thanks so much for explaining the differences in the brands. I still don't understand about the resolutions you are talking about. I just got a new Dell Pc Software & Peripherals book in the mail and they are also selling the Sony's and Palms. They are listing the Palm m515 ($349). and the Palm Tungsten T ($499) at 320x320, and the Sony's Peg-NX70V and Peg-NX60 ($599-$499) with 320 x 480 pixels.

That is what got me thinking about the Axim with only 240 x 320 pixels. Isn't more better?

I already have a Dell - Inspiron 5000 which I just love, so that is why I was leaning towards the Axim instead of the Palms.

I'd like to comment - as an veteran palm user who recently switched to PPC. The Axim overall can do much more, but in terms of battery life- Palm wins hands down. Also, I have soft reset my Axim over a dozen times thus far and in the 3 years I owned my Palm I did a soft reset once after installing some software. Last - the form factor between the 2 devices is different as well. You need to hold both devices to have an idea of which one fits your hand/shirt pocket/pocket book best. Overall, I'm happy with my switch from Palm OS to PPC - for me, I use alot of the new features the Axim affords me.

I think if you examine your needs, you'll find the machine that best suites you. If you will be using your device strictly for contacts and appointments, you may want to consider a palm OS based device. If you want to do ANYTHING else - PPC is your only other real choice besides a laptop.

Very well put! I personally need to get VPN software and be able to get my companies email via the web. My techies said that the Palm wouldn't get past my companies antiquated firewall. Otherwise I would have stuck with my Palm. (Treo). I had software that did what Excel, Word, and Powerpoint did so my reasoning wasn't applications. I am looking forward to my first PPC but I know that any programming from Bill Gates will require a good sense of humor and the right advice.

I have a fairly good sense of humor and this board has excellent advice.

Good luck!

I guess I can chime in here too. I'm a veteran Handspring User. I used my Handspring Visor for 3 years for I got my Axim. Battery life, even with the AAA batteries (and rechargeables) makes the Palm win, no chance for PPC. Realiability. Hmm. My Visor hasn't crashed on me yet. No problems whatsoever. It still works, by the way, I use it to this day, with my Axim. My Axim has been reset quite a few times. PPC is good for users who want extreme mobility with Windows at hand, meaning Word and Excel ready to go, and Outlook syncing anywhere. Other than that, if you want just an organizer for your calender and tasks and such, go with a palm. They are fast, although they can't multitask, (I honestly think that's why they're fast, because they don't multitask) but, it's your call.
