After installing active sync, everything works fine...my pc sees the axim and vice versa. But after about 3 minutes, the connection dies and when I try to re-establish (via the PC), it claims the USB port is available, but nothing is connected. What is going on here?
Incidentally, even in that 3 minutes of connection, I can't seem to access any internet sites w/ the axim. My version of active sync doesn't have a "check box" for passthrough, it just has passthrough names ("The Internet" and "Work"). How do I set things up so that I can browse?
Open ActiveSync on the Axim. With it not connected, click on Tools/Option/Schedule and uncheck the bottom box (When synchronizing remotely...). This should fix the disconnect problem.
I spoke too soon. It still is saying I'm disconnected after a few minutes. It does this on my machine at work too. The funny things is, it will periodically reconnect and then disconnect. It seems like I'm probably missing something painfully simple...I just don't know what. Again, thanks for any help.
OK, well, this next question may sound silly, but is your Axim still on after the PC-ActiveSync says it is disconnected? If you are connected without the power adapter, I think the default is for the Axim to shut down after 3 minutes. I only ask because you said you cannot reconnect from the PC.
If the Axim is still on, what happens when you tap on the Sync icon in ActiveSync? Does it reconnect?
more details: here at work the problem seems to occur when I try to get on the internet. At home, the Ax is in the cradle and connected to power supply...it definitely doesn't shut off because I see it on. When I hit "sync" while it is disconnected, it says there is something wrong with my connection settings. I will post the details of my connection settings when I get home.
Well, two possibilities I know people have also had trouble with - 1)are you running any firewall software on the PC(s)? I doubt if this is the problem though because I've heard it prevents you from making the connection in the first place. 2) Are you using an USB hub for the connection (that is, is your sync cable/cradle plugged directly into the USB port on the computers)?
Are your desktops Dell machines? Are their USBs a few years old? Having had the same problem with my work computer I scoured the existing threads here and concluded that the driver for my USB at work was problematic (one of the threads, "Active Sync Keeps timing out-", quotes a Dell forum where the user concluded that the Dell Desktop's USB driver was the problem). Several people reported solving the problem by buying a USB hub (around $10). While I will do this eventually, I have simply avoided transferring large files (mp3s) at work.
It is not a Dell PC, and it is relatively new (rebuilt from scratch about 1 year ago with brand new parts), but I think you may be on to something. I tried another machine at word before coming home and had no problems whatsoever. I'm planning on WiFi-ing the home setup anyway, so this will hopefully become a moot point. Thanks for all the help...y'all should get paid for this (considering it is better than what CS usually provides).
I had the same problem. I uninstalled activesynch from my desktop and reinstalled it and that took care of the problem. I do have a newer model Dell, and running a Belkin 5 port USB hub, but the re-installation seems to have fixed things.
