IE for Axim?
I am getting the AXIM ready for my daughter to take to college! I have it on the wireless, communicating nicely, loaded AOL IM on it last nite, have loaded the keyboard and she is using it - all is going well. I am wondering if there is a version of IE for the Axim that makes navigating the web more 'screen friendly'. Even with the screen set to 'best fit' and font on 'smallest' , it's not great.

She will be taking notes on the Axim, recording notes to herself, keeping calendar up and oh, yea... IM'ing friends! They have a wireless network at school.

Appreciate any assistance... just getting use to a PC with this small a screen is challenging!

Try Thunderhawk from Bitstream. Look for a review on Aximsite.com really soon.

Well its really the only way to get a webpage to fit in your browser. Give it a shot and you'll be amazed, I sure was...

Any idea why they charge a subscription price? Seems like a silly business model for PPC software.

Because its not really an app in the true sense. You are subscribing so that you can view pages in your axim as they look on the desktop. I think it renders the pages on the server at Bitstream and then sends them to your PPC as formated pages.

Yes....ThunderHawk is a great browswer/service, and is worth $50. I used up my 30-day trial period last week, and am now lost without it. I don't really have $50 to spend right now, but plan on subscribing come Fall semester here....when I actually have money again!

Like cageyjames said, it is not paying a yearly fee for the software. It is paying for a service. Their is a LOT of backend activity going on at ThunderHawk's end. It basically acts as a proxy that you go through to access every web page you view. Their servers basically (in simple language) take a web page (say www.cnn.com for instance) at a high resolution like you would view on your PC (say 800x600), shrinks it to fit your Axim screen (320x240) while maintaining a proper aspect ratio, and clears up the text to a readable font. For almost every site that I have visited (including Outlook Exchange Webserver with lots of frames), it looks almost identical to viewing the webpage on a desktop. And no problems reading it at all. Great service!!

Wow. Such positive reviews. Strange that this is the first I've ever heard about it. You guys sure you don't work there?

Just kidding. I'm going to have to try this out. Thanks for the heads up.

Nope, don't work there.

I'd at least give it the 30-day trial, though. Nothing to lose...well, except $50 if you like it so much you make yourself buy it.

What I wonder is if Microsoft will see the huge success of this software, and make a proxy server themselves....knowing that Pocket IE sucks at rendering websites.

Knowing Microsoft....probably not. They'll just leave us all in the dark.

I'm playing around with it now. I give it two thumbs up.

However, I hate you all for showing it to me.

Fifty more bucks down the drain...

You guys are too funny! I have informed the daughter who wants to wait until she gets to Waco (Baylor University) and try out the 30day trial down there. Now if I can only get the Axim away from her long enough, I'll try it out for myself!
Thanks for all the great information - I certainly appreciate it.

What would be more neat is if the makers of Plucker rewrote the program a bit to let your own desktop machine render the pages down live so you could use your home box as the proxy.

Okay. After 2 days of use I love absolutely love Thunderhawk. However, I think I'll have to renege on my promise to purchase because:

A. I can live with the mediocrity of PIE, and
B. I'm confident someone will come up with a solution that's freeware or much less expensive (Where are you Opera PPC Browser?)

It's a fantastic product, I just don't feel the benefits justify the cost.

I wish I was:

A. Not so cheap
B. Not so poor, and
C. Independently wealthy.

However, if I was independently wealthy I'd probably just buy a Tablet PC.
