I have yet to run my battery down - the standard one that came with the Axim. I guess I'm a little over catious!!
Is there a "pattern" to the discharge of the battery?
i.e. goes down fast at the start and slower at the end etc.

On the contrary, I found my battery indicator staying at more or less 100% for the first 45-60 minutes before starting to decrease at a steady rate initially. However, the lower you go, the faster it decrease.

Just my personal observation. Love to hear other's experience on this as well.
