I just bought an Axim X50v and love it. However, the wireless settings functionality of WM2003SE is absolutely deplorable. It is extremely and horribly designed (wtf Work and The Internet?). Worse, the provided Dell documentation is poor in this area, as well. I have read wifi.aximsite.com, but it doesnt seem to pertain to this, much.
Can someone recommend a replacement program that will allow me to easily take my PDA around and connect to various wi-fi networks (Open/WEP/LEAP)?
I want something that will allow me to just select a wi-fi network, punch in a key if needed, and let me use PIE/Remote Desktop/Putty/etc without the stupid "cannot connect. you haven't configured a proxy server" message popping up all the time.
Will Odyssey Client do this? (I've been having mixed results with it). Is there another piece of software thats better?
Despite all these complaints about the wireless software, the PDA otherwise rocks!

and yet their quartely earnning are out of this werld...
and tread lightly about the wifi tut's , as is , its the best
I appreciate your reply ironhelix, but that's not what I'm asking. I guess what I'm asking for is a simple Wi-Fi configuration utility that will allow me to pull the PDA out, select a network, connect to it successfully.
I guess a good wi-fi tutorial that taught me how to navigate the rat's nest that is WM2003SE wi-fi configuration would also due, I just haven't found a good one, yet, so any recommended urls are appreciated.
Right now, I seem to bumble around the settings randomly, to get wi-fi to work. Sometimes I'm successful, sometimes I'm not.
FYI, I am (normally) an advanced-level net engineer who deals heavily with NT, UNIX, and Cisco networking gear. So spare no info/hacks.
i can normally sign into any open wifi, with just a single tap.
Ok, so my next (probably dumb) question. I have WiFiFoFum installed, but when I try and scan I get driver error messages. Do I need to install the intersil/prism drivers roaming around on the net or something, or do I need to start troubleshooting?
First question do you have a wireless network at home?
If so does your PDA connect easily and webpages should be fast loading!
The Built in wireless should connect anywhere there is a wireless signal, although some netwworks are password protected, those you would need the password, but the open ones you should be able to connect quite easily when the message bubble pops up and asks you do you want to connect to so and so's wireless. Disable Power save located at start|settings|connections|Dell wlan utility|...choose disable in powersave, not auto ...also remove check mark below that where it says disable wlan to conserve power when battery is low. Click the Setting button to the left of that, and choose Internet or work(network) in drop down menu and choose Dell Axim x50 wlan wireless adaptor:approve:
BTW make sure your wireless is turned on!:approve:
Check out the great Tutorial here by IkeHiker on wireless located on Top of main page of this site.
I have a Link to WIFI FOFUM located in my view MYPDA if you want to try that also:approve:

I *think* I've fixed this problem. I had to do a buncha random little steps according to something I found via Google on an iPaq forum and it appears I can now do what I want fairly easily.

Thanks for all the helpful info guys!
640x480 (SE_VGA) in landscape mode is to die for!
Socket sells a WiFi utility that has a pretty slick interface, for about $25.00. I had the trial version on my PDA for a while but felt that it didn't offer that much more functionality than the built-in app.
