To get a new psp or not? Lots of writing ;)
A little bit of background first.... I'm really quite OCD when it comes to my gadgets (you'll see how this works in).

I know this is a lot of writing, it'd mean a lot to me if you'd read it though.

The story:

Well I bought the original psp not too long after it came out, $250 right out of my limited budget. I didn't know what to make of it, it was a technological marvel which I loved, but I really didn't have that much fun with it. I think I spent more time just looking at it. There were not that many games out, and none of the ones that were out really appealed to me. I liked my friends ds and when I the lite came out I bought one.... (Please don't try and do any "hatin'" on the ds, I know this is a psp forum, both are quality systems and have their merits). Again that was fun for a while but gradually I started using it less and less. Again, for the same reason, I felt like sometimes I was simply buying games for the sake of buying them. Then on that one faithful day I was carrying them both somewhere and they fell, long and hard. The psp was destroyed, demolished. The ds was largely unharmed, small crack on the hinge, dented, speaker sometimes messed up. To most that would mean nothing, but it bothers the hell out of me. I can't even use it now, I try my very best to keep my gadgets in pristine condition and this was quite upsetting.

Now I am essentially presented with a situation where I can replace one or the other. I have about 4-5 games for each, however I am really leaning towards a new psp. I feel like I have neglected it all along, and katamari is calling to me. I long to browse the web on my psp again, and gaze upon that oh so nice screen. After much debate I have decided on a new psp (something I doubt anyone here will dispute). I could not name a single game I would want for my ds, yet I could name 4 or 5 for my psp.

Patapon
MHF2
Castlevania
FF tactics
(feel free to tell me if these are good /(recommend similar games

Haha, well, after all that writing heres the real questions. I *think* I want a psp slim, even though it isn't quite as much a change as the ds lite was. I don't want either of the packages at all, the darth vader print is just goofy, and I don't like daxter or the color of the silver one. As such I would be getting a core pack piano black. Now I just have a few questions on the psp slim, some are actual content questions, others are just me being OCD.

1. How is the battery life on the slim, comparable to the classic?
2. Does the new umd latch close fully? (Having it hanging open a little would bother me immensely)
3. What is the finish on the black one? Matte, gloss? Are fingerprints and issue?
4. How do the new buttons feel? Do they wear down easily?
5. Is the TV out actually fun/useful?
6. Whats a good brand of screen protectors? (My pelican one for my old psp sucked)
7. Does the battery latch close fully and the unit feel solid all together?
8. Analog stick, does it wear down easily?
9. Is the unit easily taken apart and repaired if need be?
10. Whats a good case for the psp? (I'll probably just use my old psps slip cover that came with it).
11. How far along is the psp firmware now? Is homebrew still prevelent? (I remember being one of the first to get online using wipeout pure before the browser came out, haha good times)
12. Any other things I should know.

Well there you go, answer one, answer them all, answer none, comment on my story, call me a loser with too much time to type, I don't care. I really am looking for some some honest, thoughtful help however.

Haha, you can just read the questions, or even just tell me if you have a psp slim and like it or not. Any helpful comments would be much appreciated

I do not have a PSP, but I am wondering.....

Was the UMD disc slot cover and batter cover problemic on your old PSP? I did not notice any sticking out of covers on my friend's old generation PSP.

Now for the advice: Buy a older generation, possibly used PSP on eBay, use surplus money saved to replace your DS

I like Daxter very much, so I just got PSP Daxter Entertainment Pack - Ice Silver version for a couple of days, and have enjoyed it a lot. it's a deal price of $200, you can look up:

dealstudio.com :: View Deals - :: Deals, Coupons, Rebates, Freebies, Discounts, Bargains

But you can also wait for the new released God of War PSP bundle until in June

God of War PSP bundle with 'Deep Red' unit in June - Joystiq

i have just got my first psp the older one on ebay with loads of games for £100 second hand a few weeks ago.what a cracking bit of kit.some games i got not my kind of thing,so i bought some others on ebay and sold ones i dont want on ebay,so the games hardly cost me anything.now shock horror i have sold my dell axim x30 got a good price for it.as i only used it for gaming anyway.i dont have a problem with umd door on mine,i also have ngage which i thought was very good, but it now sits in draw,im thinking of selling it,im so pleased with psp.why do want later psp? i cannot see any advantages for a lot more cost,if you want camera surely your phone has one,if you want to attach to telly get a ps2 3 instead.my battery life is very good,i have just won larger one on ebay so 2 batterys will last all day,can you get larger one for later psp?

my local Cash Converters(a national pawnbroker chain) has them for $149 AUD thats about 60 quid...just the psp and charger... they have 5 in stock . i am so tempted.. i love my 4700 for what it can do but i hate gaming on it. they look so good but i cant play cause of that damn touch pad... must look into this further. what emulators are available? are they hard to get running? i know of firmware versions that allow you to play games from the mem stick .... still... maybe next months pay........

1. battery life is better, possibly due to the fact that its newer than my old psps battery but has a larger capacity, so should last longer...

2. the latch is totally different. has a much cheaper, non-locking door that you just open and close. feels flimsy and cheap.

3. finish is more plastic than the original. again, seems like a cheaper build quality than that of the original.

4. new buttons feel the same to me, but sony is boasting that theyre better and more durable/tactile

5. tv out? never used it

6. dont use a screen protector. i would imagine that the nicer brands for windows mobile devices would make good psp screen protectors... covertec, boxwave

7. the batter cover is just a cover on the back, not a latch per se. never gave me any issues

8. my analog stick is in good shape. i dont abuse it tho

9. iv never taken mine apart, as i never needed to... i cant imagine it would be very hard. probably much easier than a pda. they dont even use odd screws or anything...

10. save your old case. the new one wont come with one

11. homebrew is still going strong. check out the psp fanboy websites for updates and downloads in that realm. im not sure what the latest firmware is. im running 3.73

12. it has more ram than the original, is supposed to have better buttons, is lighter and a bit slimmer. the speakers are placed up higher on the front of the device, which was one thing i hated about the original, so the sound seems louder, but the placement is probably what makes all the difference.

the screen seems the same, buttons feel the same (to me). i dont know, i just think it seems cheap, like they were trying to save some money when building these things. the original seemed more durable and solid. the umd spring mechanism was nicer than the door it has now. the new model supposedly has less of a problem with fingerprint marks, which i nice i guess.

im still happy with it.

get patapon, locorocco. i like the need for speed games. theres lots of great games out there for both ds and psp

I have a PSP I love it the only prob is that i put a screen protector on it and it messed it up and damaged the screen. I have half the screen covered in dead plastic and now i don't like to play it for that reason.

Love my PSP
Excellent device. I just got the God of War entertainment pack and couldn't be happier. You've never played a game as graphically pleasing on a handheld as GoW. I also have Star Wars renegade squadron and Justice League Heroes. Both are very good.
