It is a great little device.
I was looking for something that she could easily use.
I found a review of MP3 players on Consumer Reports (I have a subscription) and the Cowan was listed as an easy to use player for PC and Mac (my wife has a mac).
They listed a different model, but I figured (or maybe hoped) this one would be good too.
Her birthday was this past Saturday, and she likes it (but hasn't used it yet).
Just to check it out, I first charged it on her Mac over night.
It did not require any drivers or anything when I plugged it, and it charged up just fine.
Sunday I put a podcast on it, and some music. But, they were on my PC. When I plugged it into my PC the PC accepted it without additional driver requests, and listed it as an external storage device.
I just opened the folders and copied the podcast and mp3s to a folder. This was simple.
They played just fine, and sounded very good.
I browsed around a little at settings and functions (I quickly tried the FM tuner, it was also easy to use) and then my wife made me put HER birthday gift away. She wants to figure out how to use it herself.
From my impressions, it is a pretty good player, and very easy to use.
After she's had it for a while I'll install the Cowan SW on my PC (it is PC only) and check for firmware updates.
Nice gift! My husband gave up trying to get tech gadgets/computer items for me as gifts. He said the "gadget fairies" arrive while he is sleeping or at work.......and manage to bring the latest item I just HAD to have :)
(and Santa leaves the BEST stuff under the tree :)
Cowon really makes some, lesser known, but quality players!
I own the Cowon A2. Everybody is like WOW! I use it extremely often for school, both for files, and connecting it to the TV. At first, the teachers were like what is that? After a while they all started like expecting me to have it, and some even used stuff from it in the lessons. Even includes the DivX and other codecs ;-)
It's currently the only player beyond our school's "no mp3 player" rules.
You mentioned firmware updates, those are quick and painless. They frequently release good firmware updates. For the A2, I simply drag and drop the file that I downloaded into the root of the drive, unplug my player, and start it, and wuala! "Firmware Update in Progress".
After a couple seconds, it starts up.
I love the USB To Go feature, great for transferring pictures from my memory card over.
Oh, and check out the new Cowon Q5. Quite an amazing player, complete with GPS, WiFi, and other features. (And it runs on Windows Mobile, can install other apps)
Quite a sweet player (I hope it still is classified as an mp3 player...)
Yes, I know I went quite far from the original U2 dicussion, but a lot of it also applies to the U2.

Wow, great idea. I didn't even think of that, lol.
Do you have to use a program such as Card Export on the Axim?
However unfortunately, the Cowon A2 only supports copying files TO the player, not from, that sucks, I don't know why they do that, as many of their other players can copy from.
(Cowon, ftr, is a division of iAudio, or the other way around, whatever)

Yes I used it on my axim with Card Export.
But now That I bought a SD Sandisk Plus 2 Gb, I directly plug the Sandisk Card to the iaudio, it's more convinient.

With USB To Go, can you plug a card reader into the device to transfer files over?
