Low volume
I find that even with the volume cranked up, the sound coming from the speakers are not very loud. It's fine if you use the headphones. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

I would imagine that the first batch may be a little flawed. As much as you're paying for it, it shouldn't be.

how would it ever be used?
Does PSP offer digital output for it to be connected to not widely supported 7.1 receivers and hook up via home theatre system?

What was wrong with plain good old Stereo!

"Dot Matrix with Stereo Sound" aahhhh rest in peace. If it werent for you, we wouldn't be here today!

I never cared too much for high volume anyway. If or when I get a PSP, I probably won't care too much if you can't crank the volume up. If I'm going to be listening to music, I'll be using headphones. If I'm playing a game, why do I care so much about the sound? I usually have my Nintendo DS muted, partially to save power, but mainly because the sound in most video games isn't particularly good.

how is the volume & quality with the supplied headphones?

I normally use $10 or $20 Sony Headphones with tiny volume control on the cord, and they last about 2 years.. they are great quality, and if end up losing the puffs, I go buy a pack from radioshack for about $2.99.

The supplied headphones are serviceable. The good thing about them is the integrated control disc that allows you to increase the volume, stop, play, fast forward etc without touching the PSP. I prefer my B&O headphones.

Is the volume low in everything (games/music/movies) or just in a certain area?

I wouldn't expect the PSP's volume to be too loud and it's probably nice in public to keep the max volume relatively low. I can see airline flights and such being overrun with video game sound effects.

In addition, I am getting some high-quality earbuds soon so those will be great.

I am guessing the PSP can support up to 7.1 surround sound through headphones such as these gaming headphones. http://www.xoxide.com/za51suulgahe.html

Personally, i dont see much of a reason why a handheld should have surround sound. Those earphones are also too dang expensive

I wish the speakers were louder, I had a Zodiac2 and the speakers were awesome on that for a handheld.

Speaker or the Headset output is really low.
If they were going to make it that low, why did they put so many bars to the volume control. When you are all the way down to the first several bars, you'd think it will blow you away at the rightest ticks, but it doesn't get too loud.

I found the following will increase the volume during game play:

1. Go to Settings/Video Settings/UMD Video Volume, change to +1 or +2
2. Go to Settings/Sound Settings/AVLS, turn AVLS off
3. Within your game if there are options to change musci/sfx etc then boost up those settings.

AVLS, turn AVLS off

This will not allow the ticks to go all the way to the right, so it is pretty visible if it is turned on, which I have no idea why Sony keeps including, if it was a "hard button/switch" yes I could understand, but to go through a whole lot to just switch it on/off...
